Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, May 21
The new season of the Hero Honda Indian Golf Tour will tee off amidst the picturesque surroundings of the Royal Springs Golf Course in Srinagar when the Rs 15-lakh Royal Springs Open begins on May 30.

Professional golf will return to the Valley after the successful staging of the Rs 15-lakh Sher-e-Kashmir Open in October 2001. Enthused by the phenomenal response from local fans and everyone concerned with the tournament, Jammu & Kashmir Tourism, with support from the State Government, has decided to host a second event.

“We are excited about hosting the Royal Springs Open. The response of the players to the Royal Springs Golf Club course was exceptional and we believe we have created a legacy for future generations. The hotels surrounding the course compliment each other and these form a big part of our future plans for Kashmir, and indeed, the whole State,” said Mr B.R Singh, Principal Secretary, Jammu & Kashmir Government.

Mr Khurshid Ganai, Commissioner Secretary, Industries and Commerce, Jammu & Kashmir Government, added: The Royal Springs Open is going to showcase our tourism efforts for Kashmir. We welcome the professional golfers to Srinagar. It is events like the Royal Springs Open, which will definitely encourage more

visitors to come to Jammu & Kashmir. World over, golf tourism has made immense strides and we believe that with a product like the Royal Springs Golf Club, we can attract quality tourists.”

“On behalf of the Professional Golfers Association of India, I would like to thank the Government and the people of Jammu & Kashmir for giving us an opportunity to come back to the Valley.

The Royal Springs Golf Club is perhaps the best course in the country and it is a pleasure to be back. All the players who were here in October for the Sher-e-Kashmir Open could not stop talking about the course and we are hopeful of an even better field for the Royal Springs Open,” said Brandon de Souza.

Mukesh Kumar, who won the Sher-e-Kashmir Open, said: “I am keenly looking forward to the Royal Springs Open. The beauty of the Royal Springs Golf Course has to be seen to be believed and there could be no better place to start the new season.”

Mukesh, the top-ranked golfer on the Hero Honda Golf Tour, won five other titles and would start the tournament as a favourite. Among the big names who will be seen in action are Mukesh Kumar, Feroz Ali, Gaurav Ghei, Vijay Kumar, Shiv Prakash, Arjun Singh, Rohtas Singh, Ali Sher, Vivek Bhandari and others.

Several leading amateurs and juniors have also entered the tournament to compete for the amateur prize.

The Royal Springs Golf Course, nestled between the breath-taking Dal Lake and the stunning Zabarwan range of mountains, is definitely the most beautiful course in Asia. The undulating fairways and lightning fast greens make this par-72 layout a treat for golfers.

The most talked about hole on the course is the famous par-3 fifth, which offers a panoramic view of the Dal Lake from an elevated tee. Robert Trent Jones Jr, one of the foremost golf course architects in the world, has designed the course.

The winner will receive Rs 2.43 lakh, while the runner-up will be richer by Rs 1.68 lakh.

A full-field of 100 professionals is expected to tee off on Thursday, May 30, following a pro-am on Wednesday, May 29.

Michael Schumacher gets UNESCO honour
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, May 21
German Formula One racing driver Michael Schumacher has been named UNESCO Champion of Sport, according to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation in the Capital.

At a ceremony at UNESCO’s headquarters on April 15 to mark his nomination, director-general Koichiro Matsuura paid tribute to Schumachar’s role in the “promotion of sport, his contribution to UNESCO’s educational action in favour of young people all over the world, and his dedication to the organisation’s ideals”.

Schumacher, the four-time world champion—1994, 1995, 2000, 2001—who has headed the Ferrari team since 1996, has put his sport to work for children in distress since 1995. Then named “UNESCO Special Envoy for Education and Sports”.".

Schumacher donated to UNESCO the 250, 000 DM (127,822 Euros) he received from the magazine Bunte for exclusive photo coverage of his wedding.

Other donations from the FI driver paid for the construction of a school in Dakar (Senegal) and improvements to the “Baraka” slum in the city, carried out under a joint project between UNESCO and ENDA Third World, a non-governmental organisation.

In 1997, he supported the opening of a clinic for child victims of war in Sarajevo. This clinic works especially with children who have suffered amputations, providing them with artificial limbs and psychological support. This year, he funded a “Palace for the Poor” in Lima (Peru). This centre helps street children, providing them with a roof, meals, medical treatment and pre-school education.

Schumacher said he has chosen to help children “because I don’t think they have as many chances as an adult who has had some education and knows how to cope with the world. They are so young, so small; they have no experience and can’t handle things all by themselves”.

Schumacher was also confident that he could do many things through sport. “I think you can do many things through sport. Kids love to play—football, anything. Sport lets them have a good time and also gives them an aim, a chance to respond to challenges, to win, to achieve something”. He said he started funding UNESCO projects as “I think it’s good to be consistent. I give a bit here and there for small projects, but the main ones are those that have developed with UNESCO..”
