Dream Theme

Dreaming of shapes
Vinaya Katoch Manhas

DREAMS are not always realistic. The objects that one sees in dreams could, at times, be distorted. In analysing such dreams the shape of the object is as important as the object itself. You could dream of a large cylindrical pipe, an empty square-shaped room or you could see yourself looking through a circular object like a bangle. A swastika is a common symbol in dreams, so is a square.

According to Indian thought, shapes such as domes, swastikas or squares, which symbolise the mandap for marriages or havan, are good omens.

As per western thought, seeing a circle is not a good omen as it predicts deception and associations which could bring you disgrace. Triangles foretell separation from friends, and love affairs terminating in disgrace. A cross is considered to be an auspicious symbol as it is also a religious symbol.

In fact, while analysing dreams, the colours of the shapes and patterns are also taken into consideration. According to Indian thought, although seeing a swastika is a good omen, but if it is black, it is not considered good.

Psychoanalytically speaking, dreams of shapes mean that the dreamer has accepted things as they are. He is able to perceive his true nature clearly. The circle represents the inner being or the self. It can also imply unity and perfection. The crescent signifies the feminine mysterious power which is both intuitive and non-rational. The cross is a religious image like the swastika.

It represents the trinity. The four arms pointing in opposite directions signify conflict, anguish and distress, but it means that ultimately perfection can be achieved. A diamond in dreams means that lesser and lesser options are available to us. The oval is the symbol of the womb. The spiral is the perfect path to evolution. The principle is that everything is in motion but is also rising at the same time. The square signifies the manifestation of spirit as matter.

A square in a circle represents the act of something beginning to take form. Any square object signifies the feminine principle. The star portrays the aspirations and hopes of a person. The swastika with its arms moving clockwise portrays the ideal man and the power he has which he uses to do good.

According to eastern thought, it signifies the movement of the sun. Dreaming of yourself making a square is supposed to relate to your outlook of the world, a circle to your inner being, and a triangle to your sex life.
