Q Sir, could you please tell me what do we mean by POP3 server and what is its usage in networking. I shall be thankful to you if you answer to my query.

Malkiat S. Sethy, Madhpur (Samrala)

A. The POP3 means Post Office Protocol level 3 service and the server running this service are called as POP3 servers. These servers are being used in email for receiving the email messages. However, it does not have any role in networking.

Q I have an assembled PC with Celeron (M), 800 MHz processor, 128 MB RAM, 20 GB HDD, 810 e motherboard and Win ’98 OS with studioworks 57 M LG monitor with SiS 630 display adapter. The queries I have is as follows:
1) While starting my PC the first display I get is of the Windows ’98 and not the one which displays the system configuration and checking memory and the one in which it is given as to with what key would we be able to switch over to the system settings. Does this display indicate any problem with my PC? If yes, how should I be able to rectify it?

2) I have partitioned my HD into 3 parts with C: as1.99 GB, D: as 8.53 GB and E: as 8.53 GB. I have Win ’98 in C: drive. How can I install another OS on any other drive so that I get an option to start in any of the OS while booting? For achieving this, do I need to format the other drive? How can I proceed by not formatting it?
3) There is a software which I want to remove, but when I try to uninstall them then I get the error message as "Could not open the INTALL.LOG file" and when I try to find this file manually then also I m not able to. How should I proceed to uninstall them? I don’t want to re-download this file all over again just to delete it back?
4) Can I delete some of the temporary files in the C:\ Windows folder?

Sheena

A Regarding your first query, this does not actually represent a problem but it is a case of customisation. This happens mostly in case of branded computers like Compaq and can be solved by changing BIOS. You can also try loading the setup default in your BIOS feature setup to solve this problem. Regarding your second query, you can easily load any other operating system on your hard disk on any other partition and by default you will also get a booting menu for selection of the operating system at the time of booting your system. So, this is actually not a problem. You can either boot with a bootable medium to install the other operating system or can install the other operating system from the Windows ’98 itself. Now as far as formatting the partition is concerned, it is always better to format the partition on which you are planning to load the operating system, however if it contains some important data, then you may not need to do it and install the operating system as it is. Regarding you third problem, you can download any third party disk cleaning and uninstaller utility like Norton SystemWorks cleanup utility and can remove these orphan files completely. Regarding your fourth problem, you can safely remove the *.tmp files in the c:\ windows\ temp directly and make your system cleaner. However, as an alternative you can also run disk cleanup utility in Windows to clear this mess.

Q I am facing few problems with "Tomato 810 Chipset motherboard". Those are CMOS problem. Actually, it was working fine since past one year. Now, whenever I switch on the system it was asking to reconfigure CPU settings. I was just reconfiguring it and was working fine. Now there is absolutely no display. I tried to change the CMOS battery but to no avail.

The system configuration is as follows:

Celeron 566E

64 MB RAM,

10 GB HDD

1.44 MB FDD,

Samtron Colour Monitor

Win ’98 Keyboard

Logitech Mouse.

As per motherboard manufacturer specification, the settings are correct.

Prahallad.K.Basavanagudi, Bangalore

A From the description of your problem, it appears that there are some problems in your motherboard. You should get your motherboard examined for any possible errors. I am reasonably sure that in your case these errors are being caused by problems in your motherboard, thus a thorough examination of your motherboard would help.

Q I have an assembled PC with the following configuration: P III, 1GHz , 128 MB RAM, 40 GB HDD, 52x CD ROM Drive, Smart Link Internal Modem Drive. It has Operating System Windows ‘98. I purchased this PC recently and the problem is whenever I shutdown my computer, it does not display the message, "It is now safe to turn off your computer." Please help me.

Kaplesh Negi, Mandi Adampur

A Please note that if you are using the ATX power supply and the ATX motherboard, then you will not get this error message and your PC will shutdown automatically, therefore it is not a problem. However, if you are not using the ATX motherboard, then you should load the default setup in BIOS feature setup and also reset the power management settings to default.

Q I want to ask you that from which site, can I download free software for writing Punjabi. Also please tell me the software through which I can network two computers (through dial up network and modem.)

Aman Mantri, Talwara

A For writing Gurumukhi, you need to download the necessary font. There are many Punjabi sites on the Internet, which provide the Gurumukhi font. Two such sites are www.gurmukhi.org and www.punjabonline.com. You can download the Gurumukhi font and load it on your computer You can further search more fonts on the net using a search engine. Regarding your second query, you can connect two computers through dialup networking using Hyper Terminal. This is a default Windows application. Some other third party software could be PC anywhere from Symantec Corporation.

Q I own a PC with the following specifications: Celeron 566 MHz, 128 MB RAM, Priya 810 chipset motherboard with inbuilt VGA card, Pinnacle systems TV tuner Card, 52X CD ROM. Can there be any provision to connect my PC to TV so that I can watch the movies played on my PC on TV screen.

Hukam Singh

A You can view your PC screen on your TV as there is an option in the TV tuner card to use the TV as monitor. All you need to do is first disable the onboard VGA card and configure the TV tuner card correctly.

Q I have Intel Celeron 635 MHz. PC with 30GB HDD, 64 MB RAM, 15" LG Studioworks monitor, onboard sound card on an Intel 810 motherboard. I have 5 partitions having FAT32. I have a dual booting system with Win ’98 SE on C: and Win 2000 PRO on D: drive. I want to remove Win 2000 pro and upgrade WIN ’98 SE to WIN Me because my WIN 98 SE does not detect the sound card. Also some applications such as bleem do not run on WIN 2000 PRO. Please guide me.

Manish Bansal Samana

A In multi- operating system environment it is always better to fresh install software rather than upgrading them from an earlier version. Moreover, since there is no way for uninstalling the Windows 2000 other then deleting and formatting the partition, thus it makes all the more better to fresh install the operating system you want. But all said and done this is possible and as the first step you should manually remove Windows 2000 from your computer and then you should upgrade Windows ’98.

Q I have a Hewlett Packard branded computer. My System configuration is Pentium III, 64 MB RAM, 15 GB HDD, Motorola internal Fax modem. I have a two partition of HDD C: and d: drives. My first problem is when after a complete scanning of a system when I defrag the system it gives the message reading drives information and after 10 per cent completion of the defragmentation, it starts defragmentation again right from start. It does not defrag the Hard disk 100 per cent. This is the problem in C: drive. My D: drive defrags properly. Secondly, when I run the floppy in the Floppy disk drive, the floppy disk drive makes noise. Please solve my problem.

Sumit Malik, Karnal (Haryana)

A For the solution of your problem, please close all applications running in the back ground before running defrag. This includes any Internet application, screen savers, Video wallpaper, items in your system tray etc. and then run defrag. Since normally the items running in the background like screen saver, items of system trey etc. hinder defrag by restarting it and making a loop, therefore this error occurs. I am sure this solution will solve your problem.
