Douglas Hurd

THE former British Foreign Minister Douglas Hurd was in Delhi in January 1992 to strengthen the ties between India and the United Kingdom. During his short stay at Delhi he met many Indian leaders and held a press conference for a brief period. It was during this conference that I happened to be present and was able to sketch him.

As the conference came to a close, I approached him for his autograph on his sketch. For a while he kept quiet and then he asked me whether he could have a similar sketch.

As I had already done two of his sketches, I readily presented both and asked for his signatures on one. He was happy to oblige and wrote ‘congratulations’ before he affixed his signature over it.
