Jerks may give bad sectors

Hardware handling is one of the most difficult task and also one of the major reasons for the problems in the computer. Normally majority of the hardware-related problems in the computer occur due to bad handling of the hardware. Thus, if you can handle the hardware properly, you cannot just save the computer from frequent breakdowns but can also protect it from manageable losses arising out of failure of the computer hardware.

The issue related to the hardware handling begins with the cabinet itself. Normally it has been observed that due to space constraints sometimes the computer assembler and the users try to fix up the component of the computer in a smaller cabinet, which though accommodates all components yet is not as per the guidelines all hardware manufacturer. If you have an ATX motherboard, then the best solution is to go for full tower cabinet instead of mini-tower. Since the design of ATX motherboard is such that a lot of air displacement is required therefore the choice should be for full tower cabinets. However, you should also take care to note the power rating of the SMPS.

 


Since under the guidelines provided by the manufacturer, the power rating is also mentioned, therefore one should choose the cabinet with appropriately rated SMPS. Normally, this is one instance, where the computer users do not give any importance and depend absolutely on the choice of the hardware assembler.

Tips related to the cabinet are just the beginning of the proper hardware handling. The next most important thing is the handling of computer components. Since human body has static electricity, therefore in no case you should not your hardware equipment and gadgets at any point of time with bare hands. This does not mean that you should not handle your basic computer related problems yourself. But before you touch any hardware component, you should always put on an anti-static band on your wrist or you should ground your self properly. Also make sure that you touch all hardware components for the edges and do not touch the circuitry on it. Even otherwise one has no business touching the circuitry on the hardware component. If you have to pick up the cards from your motherboard, you should simply loosen the screw and hold the card from the edges and take it out from its slot. Similarly, you should handle the RAM also.

Also make sure that once these components are out you should never place them on any surface, which may have static electricity. The best solution for handling your hardware component is to put them on their original packing that is on the anti-static electricity packing in which the equipment is being supplied. These plastic packing is no ordinary packing and is actually a non-static electricity platform. The same logic applies to the motherboards also. If at all you have to replace your motherboard, then you should always put it on an anti-static surface. This will take save the motherboard from all hazards of static electricity.

The next important hardware, which needs to be handled very carefully, is the hard disk. Hard disk is one such important component, which should be taken very carefully. The first and the most important care for your hard disk is to protect it from any kind of jerks, excessive heat, humidity etc., which may affect your hard disk. Normally, the computer users do not care much about the hard disk and often exposes it to hazards. For example, if you do not handle your hard disk well and if it gets lot of jerks, then there are all the possibilities that your hard disk may develop bad sectors. Similarly humidity and excessive heat can also damage not only the data but also the hard disk physically. Also the computer users must remember that for efficient use of hard disk, it is essential that it be installed properly, which means that due care has been taken for the issues like alignment and proper placing of your hard disk. You should not fix your hard disk either tilted or in other wrong ways. This will surely affect the hard disk physically some time in the future. Another very important factor related to the hard disk is it’s placing. As far as possible do not install the hard disk in front of the SMPS as the electromagnetic field of the SMPS may affect your hard disk. Also make sure to use the primary IDE channel for the hard disk and make it primary master. Like other hardware components, you should also take care not to touch any exposed circuitry or the logic card, as it may cause severe damage to your hard disk.
