VIP Toon Tales

Zubin Mehta
Ranga

ONE of the best known music conductors of the world, Zubin Mehta, who is of Indian origin, was in Delhi in 1994 to conduct an orchestra. He was like a VIP and was always surrounded by his bodyguards who would not let anyone meet him. He was staying in one of the posh hotels and all my efforts to meet him always remained unsuccessful.

Many times I would find it difficult even to fix up an appointment with him. However, I made up my mind to gate-crash at a place where he was having his usual practice. I stood in one corner and watched his performance. It was a delight to watch him in action. I religiously made his picture as he appeared to me.

One of the organisers who saw the sketch felt that I deserved to be introduced to him and took me to him. Zubin saw himself in action in the picture and wrote "Greetings" before he affixed his signature over it.
