PNB to launch hockey academy
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, May 1
Good times, it seems, are rolling in for Indian hockey. The Punjab National Bank (PNB), the largest nationalised bank in the country, will soon launch a hockey academy with the “aim to developing talented youngsters to become quality players without sacrificing their educational careers”.

Mr S S Kohli, chairman and managing director of PNB, announced in the Capital on Wednesday that money will be no constraint in setting up the academy, which will start functioning from the Shivaji Stadium in Delhi by June end, to begin with, before the Bank acquires its own place in Gurgaon to create a proper hockey academy with astro turf and all.

Mr Kohli said former Olympian and Arjuna Awardee Ajit Pal Singh would be the chief adviser of the academy.

Ajit Pal Singh is also one of the selectors of the Punjab and Sind Bank Hockey Academy. Ajit Pal and another former Olympian, Harbinder Singh, were present when Mr Kohli made the announcement.

Mr Kohli said that the boys would be selected from “hockey pockets” of the country. He said once the academy gets going, a full-time director will be appointed to look after the day-to-day functioning.

Mr Kohli said that the board of directors of PNB were very enthusiastic about the hockey academy project as the general opinion is that “let us produce at least one Olympian hockey player”.

And he assured that “money will be no problem” as the board has agreed to loosen the purse strings for the academy project.

Mr Kohli said that the proposal was to ensure that the selected players “pursue their studies, but at the same time practice hockey under the guidance of an able coach and become good players”.

He said the boys will be absorbed in the PNB team after an initial training of two to three years. He said the academy, to start with, will have 22 players, who may be students of class 8 to 10.

The players will be selected by a panel of experts specially constituted for the purpose at three to four identified centres through an open advertisement.

The Bank will pay stipend to the selected players for three years. The Academy will also bear all the expenses towards boarding, lodging, equipment, kit etc of the players.

Mr Kohli maintained that the Bank would also engage a medical consultant and physiotherapist to take care of all the aspects of coaching and physical fitness of the players.

Besides Ajit Pal Singh, there will be two more advisers. The academy will be managed by a committee headed by the Executive Director of the Bank and a director to be appointed by the bank. Mr Kohli said efforts will also be made to get the academy affiliated to the Indian Hockey Federation.

Mr Kohli said PNB had initially toyed with the idea of starting a football academy, but the response was so tepid that the proposal had to be shelved.

Instead, the bank decided to go in for an hockey academy, which looks a lot more viable project.

The 107-year-old PNB already employs a number international sportspersons like Rajesh Toora (powerlifting), Jagan Bengle (carrom), C P Verma and Prem Lata Suman (athletics) and Leena Furtado (powerlifting).

The PNB also recently appointed Arjuna Award-winning archery champion Limba Ram into its fold.

The PNB Hockey Academy will be yet another addition to a profusion of hockey academies in the country, including the prestigious ones like the Air-India Academy, based at the Maj Dhyan Chand National Stadium in Delhi and the Punjab

and Sind Bank Academy based at Jalandhar. The existing PNB senior hockey team is one of the best in the country.

PNB already has a scheme for recruitment of outstanding sportspersons . But the scheme is designed to help outstanding players in the age group of 18 to 26 years. In the subordinate cadre, the persons who have passed fifth standard with ability to read and write are considered instead of middle pass, which is minimum required qualification for appointment in the subordinate cadre.

The PNB has a system of having conducting sports and cultural events at all-India level.

It has a three-tyre system where the employees first compete at the regional level and thereafter at the inter-zonal level before taking part at the all-India level.

In sports, there are 11 events. The winning teams in these meets are deputed to participate in the all-India meets.

Irrigation Department transfers 25 from Sonepat, Rai divisions
Our Correspondent

Sonepat, May 1
The Haryana Irrigation Department has issued an order transferring 25 employees from the Rai and Sonepat Water Service Divisions to the Delhi Water Service Division with immediate effect. According to a report, this has caused widespread resentment among the employees and they are planning to launch an agitation on the issue.

Many employees alleged that the authorities had taken this action to “teach them a lesson” as they had protested against the misdeeds of the officials and mis-utilisation of funds by them. They pointed out that though the state government had imposed a ban on mass transfers of employees, the Chief Engineer, Irrigation had violated the ban with impunity.

Meanwhile, the Haryana Government PWD Mechanical Workers Union has warned the Chief Engineer, Irrigation, that the employees would launch an agitation on the issue if he failed to revoke the order. The Sarv Karamchari Sangh, Haryana has also opposed the mass transfers of the employees and urged the state government to order immediate cancellation of the order passed by the Chief Engineer.

Mr Sheelak Ram Malik, general secretary of the sangh, also condemned the mass transfers of employees and announced that the union would hold a state-level meeting on May 4 at Rohtak to chalk out the future course of action on the issue. He also urged the Chief Minister, Mr Om Prakash Chautala, to immediately intervene and solve the issue through negotiation.

Meanwhile, the employees of the Public Health Department burnt the effigy of the Superintending Engineer who retired from service on Tuesday. The protesting employees also submitted a memorandum listing their demands to the Deputy Commissioner for taking further action in the matter. The main demands, among others, include action against the SHO of the Baroda police station in the district.
