Keep a tab on heartbeats, if you’re in urban India
Tribune News Service

Faridabad, April 25
Occurrence of heart diseases, especially angina and heart attack, is on the rise in the country. At least 10 per cent of the adults in the urban areas and five per cent in the rural parts are affected by them.

This was stated by Dr Nasim Ahmed Khan, a consultant physician based here, in his talk on heart care organised at the National Council for Cement and Building Materials (NCB) at Ballabgarh on Wednesday. Dr Khan said there were several risk factors like high cholesterol level, diabetes, hypertension and obesity leading to heart diseases. Lifestyle factors such as smoking, sedentary habits and stress also played a major role, he said.

Chest pain in angina (which result from fixed blockage in one or more blood vessels of heart) was provoked by physical or emotional stress. The symptoms manifested as pressure, heaviness, squeezing or tightness in the chest. The patient would get quick relief on taking rest and medication.

He said similar symptoms occurred during heart attack too, but the pain would be more severe, and would not be relieved by rest. It would likely to be associated with other symptoms like sweating, nausea, vomiting, irregular heartbeat and fainting.

It was very important that any form of new chest pain (or change in the pattern of chest pain for those with stable angina) be promptly evaluated at a medical facility centre, equipped to deal with cardiac emergencies. Currently there were several diagnostic and therapeutic options available for assessing and providing appropriate treatment, he said.

He added that in spite of all advancement made in medical technology, the most effective means to decrease the chances of the disease was through adopting a healthy lifestyle and proper treatment of risk factors (diseases). Regular exercise, including brisk walking for at least 30 minutes five times a week, moderate diet with low saturated fats and high intake of fibrous foods.

If a person was taking a balanced and healthy diet, multivitamins and antioxidants had hardly any role to play for a healthy heart. He said smoking also posed a serious risk to a healthy heart.

The NCR Director-General, Mr S. J. Raina, was among others who were present. The Institute had recently organised a talk on ‘Urological problems’.
