L&T takes its pick at PEC Chandigarh, April 25 With a view to encourage team spirit, papers were presented by teams of three members each. “Building Automation”, was chosen as the theme of the technical presentation, which saw participation by 11 teams, of which seven were shortlisted. These shortlisted teams gave their Powerpoint presentations, in which the team of Tarundeep Kaur, Anuj Sharma and Kunal Banerjee was declared winner for their presentation on the topic “Hybrid Automatic Fire-Fighting System”. The presentation on “Automatic Model of Security System for Commercial Buildings” won Richa Bhake, Tushar Barrak and Shachi Wadhawan the second place. Each member of the best team would be awarded a scholarship of Rs 1,000 per month for the seventh and eighth semester. Also, the winning team was selected for placement in L and T and a reward of Rs 12,000 each announced, for them provided they completed six months of training with the company. Each member of the second-best team would get a cash award of Rs 2,500. Interacting with the students, vice-president of L and T, Mr R.K. Gogia, along with his team of Mr P.K. Roy and Mr V.K. Bhardwaj, interacted with the students and faculty and discussed the global challenges in engineering and technology. Mr Gogia said that they had adopted the catchword of “Catch ‘em Young” and L and T had begun interaction with 47 engineering colleges in the country, of which PEC was one. Earlier, in his inaugural address, Dr Baljeet S. Kapoor, urged the team of L and T to sign an MoU with PEC with a view to give momentum to research activities in the college and enhance sponsored training of students. |
PEC placement drive: adding the ‘zing’ To promote placement of students of Punjab Engineering College, college authorities have focused their attention on industry-institute interaction and drafted a plan which will come into effect from the ensuing semester. The Dean Post-graduate Studies, Dr Gurnam Singh has been assigned the task of giving attention to development of postgraduate courses and start Ph.D programmes from the forthcoming academic session. The convenors of the Board of Studies has also recommended and passed orders for restructuring the ME courses, to be in line with the latest instructions of the All India Council of Technical Education and increase their duration from one-and-a-half years to two years. Dr Gurnam Singh has also submitted a proposal to promote research activities in the college and steps initiated to make the postgraduate laboratories functional. Besides, to promote industry-institute interaction, a firm providing consultancy has been approved by the Chandigarh Administration. Instructions have been issued to all departments to ensure that projects taken up by students are industry-relevant. The Training and Placement Cell in the college has also been equipped to monitor and evaluate the output of students during placement interviews and after their joining the industry. |

Clash of exam dates
worries students Chandigarh, April 25 Examination of BA III students was earlier slated for April 26 but had to be postponed because of the threat of the PCCTU to boycott the examination. Students of CA Intermediate in a press release said the university should make a change in the date of examination because they were prepared for CA Intermediate as per the original plan. Mr Ashok Raj Bhandari, joint controller of examination, said the university had no intention of postponing the university examination. He said the dates did not clash with any university examination and moreover the number of students appearing in CA was very small. They also could avail another chance there. A student said the university should reconsider its decision because the university could make arrangements for another date to suit the convenience of the students. |
Mizo students meet Jacob Chandigarh, April 25 Talking to the students, General Jacob recalled his old days in the Lusai Hills of Mizoram when he was Army Commander in the Eastern Command. The General asked the students to sing the famous folk song ‘‘Lendupuli’’. Students overcame their reluctance and started singing when the Governor himself joined them. Most of them were from Aizwal but others were from southern parts of Mizoram. The visitors presented a shawl and the traditional Mizoram bag to the Governor as a memento. |
CAT notice to UT Administrator Chandigarh, April 25 The petitioner, Ms Bali, had filed a case for quashing her termination order passed by the UT Administration on April 18, 2002 and for issuance of directions to the official to reinstate her with effect from the date of her termination from service with all consequential benefits.
