Salim Ansari gets Player of the Year Award

New Delhi, April 16
Salim Ansari, the goalkeeper of Delhi Soccer Association Senior Division League champions Hindustan Club, was presented the ‘Player of the Year Award’ at a function held in the Capital.

Salim Ansari, whose brilliant goalkeeping was one of the factors responsible for Allwyn-sponsored Hindustan Club’s maiden DSA League title victory, was presented a Kelvinator refrigerator by executive vice-president (marketing) of Electrolux Kelvinators Anand Bhardwaj. Other members of the Hindustan Club were also felicitated on the occasion.

Salim Ansari was the third player to receive the Player of the Year Award, instituted in 1999-2000. The previous winners were both defenders – Ravinder Singh and Joginder Singh Rawat..

Mr Anil Bhardwaj said, “Our company is fully satisfied with the progress made by Hindustan Football Club and would like to continue the association”.

A five-member committee had unanimously chosen Salim Ansari as the best player of Delhi for the 2001-2002 season. Born in Mughalsarai, Salim Ansari learnt his

football at the Bareilly Sports Hostel before joining Mahindras of Mumbai in 1991. He remained with Mahindras till 1994.

Then he switched over to Dempo (Goa) and played for them for three years till 1997.

He played for the club in the National Football League in 1997. From 1998 to 2000, he donned the jersey of Mahindra United. Ansari has impressed the Delhi soccer fans in his very first season in the Capital, with his “confident collections and calm temperament under pressure”.

Following the award ceremony, a group discussion was

initiated on the National Football League (NFL) by noted journalist and commentator Novy Kapadia. Novy pointed out that the top nine goal scorers in this year’s NFL were all foreigners. He also noted that except for the bottom three clubs, the top scorers for all the other nine clubs were imported players.

Former FIFA referee Melwyn D’Souza, who supervised the 1979 Junior World Cup in Japan, stressed that the NFL exposure has helped to improve the overall efficiency and fitness level of the Indian referees.

Others spoke about the urgent need to market Indian football in an attractive way to get sponsorships, and the urgency to nurture talented young players.

School Sports Quiz back on ESPN

After a successful run last year, the ESPN School Quiz is back for the second time. The show will be aired on weekdays from Monday to Friday at 5.30 pm and repeated at 11.30 p m.

The ESPN School Quiz showcases the best of sports quizzing talent from around the country. As many as 108 schools came through a tough selection process to feature on this television show.

Over 2000 teams from 17 cities had to get past a written test. Cities and towns like Bhilai, Bhopal, Darjeeling, Dehradun, Farakka, Gangtok, Indore, Mangalore, Nasik, Siliguri, Shimla, Surat, Tezpur, Vijayawada and Udhagamandalam were represented for the first time. On-ground quizzes were also conducted in six cities in the search for the best talent.

Twenty-seven top teams from each of the four zones — North, South, East and West were selected for the final phase of ‘on-air’ quizzing, giving every one of the 216 students a chance to test their knowledge of sports.

ESPN School Quiz offers fabulous prizes. The all-India winners will receive a cash award of Rs 5 lakh.

The amount will be utilised for the development of sports facilities in their school. The team members of the winning team, along with their teacher, will be flown to any major international sporting event of their choice from events featured on either ESPN or Star sports.

Sachin Khurana hits double century for Gemini

Sachin Khurana scored a smashing double century and Kshitij Rohtagi hit a century as Gemini smothered Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) by 209 runs in an A-II Division match of the DDCA League at Kotla II ground in the Capital.

Gemini, who batted first, were well served by the no-holds-barred batting performance of Sachin Khurana, whose mammoth knock of 276 runs came off a mere 95 balls studded with 30 sixes and 16 fours. Kshitij Rohtagi was equally merciless on the LIC bowlers as he knocked up an unbeaten 118 with 15 boundaries and five sixes.

Scores: Gemini Club: 471 for 4 in 35 overs (Sachin Khurana 276, Kshitij Rohtagi 118, Ashwant Kumar 38, Rajesh Azad 2 for 46). LIC: 262 all out in 34.3 overs (Rajesh Azad 44, C K Bajaj 42, Ishneet Singh 2 for 18).

Darling Club beat Malik Sports by 102 runs in an A-II Division match at the DAV College ground. Scores: Darling Club: 279 all out in 39.2 overs (Ankur Sharma 60, Manjeet Rajput 56, Mahesh Rawat 46, Faisal 6 for 37).

Malik Sports: 107 all out in 23.4 overs (Yasin 30, Robin Choudhary 5 for 18, Anil Choudhary 5 for 46). Super Star defeated Sarojini Nagar by seven wickets in B Division match at the University ground.

Scores: Sarojini Nagar: 203 for 9 in 40 overs (Kartikey Bhati 68, Manu Sharma 36 n o, Durga Prasad 3 for 29).

Super Star: 207 for 3 in 37.5 overs (Manas Malhotra 55 n o, Prabjeet Singh 32 no, Prabjeet 34 no, Prateek 32, Bobby Suri 3 for 36).

Pusa Youngsters beat Rajinder Nagar by 66 runs in an A-I Division match at Kalindi College ground.

Scores: Pusa Youngsters: 181 for 9 in 40 overs (Amit Bansal 49, Amit Khurana 38 n o, Kashmir Singh 3 for 21, Surender Kumar 3 for 28).

Rajender Nagar: 115 all out in 34.3 overs (Vivek Kumar 29, Vaibhav Kumar 4 for 17). Delhi Colts beat Pioneer by six wickets in an A-II Division match at the University ground.

Scores: Pioneer: 199 for 7 in 40 overs (Atif Yousuf 78, Ashu 62, Suraj Verma 3 for 18). Delhi Colts: 200 for 4 in 36.2 overs (Aniruddha Tripathi 87 n o, Kanav Anand 54 n o).

T N Colts beat Ekta Club by five wickets in an A-II Division match at Kotla-II.

Harish bowls Sonnet to win

A devastating 4 for 25 bowling spell by Harish Kumar helped Sonnet Club beat Madan Lal Academy by four wickets in the seventh All-India Maharaja Agarsen Stndord Under-17 Cricket Tournament at the Mohan Meakin ground. Scores: 122 all out in 36.5 overs (Danny Jim 42, Varun Singh 22, Harish Kumar 4 for 25). Sonnet Club: 124 for 6 in 29.5 overs (Yogesh Nagar 34, Abhishek Vashisth 31, Aditya Jain 3 for 24). In the second match, played at the Captain Dharam Pal Sports Complex, Maharaja Agarsen Sports Club beat Harry Coaching Centre by 130 runs. For Maharaja Agarsen, Ankit Rawat scored an unbeaten 83. Rs 251 cr collected in taxes

Ghaziabad, April 16
The income tax department has collected a revenue of Rs 251 crore against a target of Rs 241 crore this year. The revenue represents collections from both the corporate and the non-corporate sectors.

The Income Tax Commissioner, Mr Dig Vijay Kumar, asked the income tax officer to take action against the persons who have failed to file their returns within a month.

Ghaziabad circle which had a target of Rs 241 crore has collected a revenue of Rs 251.6 crore. Out of the Rs 251 crore, the revenue collected from Noida is Rs 179.57 crore while Ghaziabad has contributed Rs 71.49 crore only.

The Income Tax Commissioner said that a list of the assessees has been compiled on the basis of telephone directory and strict penal action was being contemplated against those who failed to file their returns by the end of the month. All such persons would be issued a show cause notice.

Mr Kumar said that action on the basis of telephone directory might take sometime. However, all those shirking their responsibility would not be allowed to get away.

Mr Kumar said that apart from telephone users, the department had also initiated a campaign against those who came under different categories of ward six scheme. A street to street directory was being made which would give the details about house owners and their tenants, he said. “Though it is a little tedious work, we hope to complete it soon with people’s corporation,” the commissioner said.
