Walking your way to good health
V.S. Mahajan

WALKING as a form of exercise, helps to offset the disadvantages of fast-paced lifestyles. As such, we stand to benefit if we walk on a regular basis.

Right time to get up

What is the most appropriate time to wake up in the morning so that you can get the maximum benefits from your morning walk. This varies from person to person and season to season. Certainly an early riser has an advantage for he gets more time to plan his walking schedule. An early morning walk is more suitable for summer months, while in the winters, one could go out in the late afternoon.

Once a pattern of waking up at a particular time is established one wakes up even without an alarm. It become a habit and doesn’t need extra effort.

What dress should be worn

The clothes should be comfortable and appropriate for the season. Likewise, shoes and socks should aid a comfortable and easy walk.

Relaxed mood

The purpose of walking is not to complete a routine but to make the best of it. Enjoy it and derive maximum benefit from it. This can be done only when one is relaxed. In fact, unhappy thoughts are a great hindrance to a healthy walk. Keep unhappy thoughts out of your mind while starting for a walk. Concentrate on walk, enjoy nature’s bounty, sport a smile on your face and greet warmly the acquaintances you come across.

Walk at a comfortable pace. This will improve your blood circulation and can help combat certain illnesses, especially blood sugar.

How much to walk and time spent

One should walk for as long as one doesn’t feel tired. Overdoing walking is not advisable. Likewise it is not advisable to walk briskly and then immediately afterwards start strenuous exercise as this can cause harm.

Spare time between walking and exercise

Take a break between walking and exercise, more so if the walk has been vigorous. Unless the body temperature becomes normal exercising would only put extra strain on your system. Thus the golden rule should be to give your body enough rest after a walk. Only when your body temperature has come down sufficiently start exercising and again immediately after exercise don’t walk home. The body needs some relaxation.

What to do when unable to walk

When walking is not possible for one reason or the other, one could take a small walk within the house followed by some light exercise.
