Q. I have Zenith Infotainer with following configurations: P III, 533 MHz, SiS 630 Main Board, 20 GB Hard Disk, 256 MB RAM, HSP56 Internal Modem. The hard disk partitions are C: = 2.92 GB, D: = 6.55 GB, E: = 2.92 and F: =6.55 GB, On C: drive, I have only Win '98 SE install and on E: drive, I have Win 2000 server as OS. My problem is that sometimes when I run an application or install any program system shows a blue screen and a message is displayed i.e. "Dumping Physical Memory" and starts counting from 1 to 100 after that system restarts. In startup and recovery option I have selected "Complete Memory Dump," I shall be thankful to you if you solve this problem.

— Samarth Sharma, Ludhiana.

A. For effective solution to this problem, you should install the service pack 2 of Windows 2000. It has been reported that installing this service pack solves your problem, unless there is some problem in your actual memory. Also, you should check all physical (not on board) cards installed on your system, and if possible interchange their slots. I hope this will solve your problem.

Q. I have an assembled PC Celeron 733 MHz with 64 MB RAM (Simtronics), 20 GB hard disk, Intel 810 chipset motherboard (66 MBPS data transfer rate), Operating system on my computer is Win '98 (Second Edition). My first problem is that I want to copy free software from other computer through floppy (3 1/2 inch). Installation file of that software is of 1.54 MB size. Win Zip makes it of 1.49 MB after zipping. While copying, it gives message "not enough space on floppy so use a floppy of higher size." Is it possible to copy that file in two floppies and then copy it to my computer? My second problem is that I have no partition on my Hard disk. So it has resulted in a kind of speed loss. As I have some valuable data on that PC, it is not possible for me to format the hard disk. Is it possible to do partition on the hard disk without formatting it?

Vikrant Arora, Ferozepur City.

A. Regarding your first problem, you can download and install the software called "Fsplit" from the Website www.partridgesoft.com/filesplit. This software breaks the large files into smaller files and makes it easier for you to transfer it even through floppies. Thus using this software, you can transfer your program.

Regarding, your second problem, you can try the software partition magic and can download it from www.winplanet.com/winplanet/reviews/588/1/. However, you must read it its help file and instructions before using this software.

Q. I own a system with P III, 866 MHz, 20GB, 128 MB RAM with Intel processor. I have attached D-LINK DFM-560ES 56 KBPS external modem to it. I frequently use Internet on the same. And I am fully satisfied with the speed. My problem is that when I want to fax from my system I use supervoice for the same. I can hear modem lifting dialtone but system gives the message THERE IS NO DIAL TONE. PLEASE MAKE SURE THE... I have also checked the cables that are properly connected. Surfing on the Net is also done through the same system. Please guide me so that I can overcome my problem.

PrahladAlreja, Rajpura Town

A. Please make sure that your Fax software is configured to use this modem, as this problem is common, when you do not have the modem configured for sending and receiving the faxes. The dialing of the number is only a part and the connection is established after the negotiating tone, therefore do not get confused by the dialing tone as despite this tone the problem could occur due to modem not configured for using the fax. Also, you can check it under the properties of the particular fax program you are using for its configuration.

Q. I have small problem on my home PC. 1. Pentinum III. 2. Intel motherboard (450 MHz). I brought a new hard disk (40 GB) to enhance my machine. Then I installed Windows 2000. It was installed properly. Then I restarted my machine. It booted but I couldn't use my keyboard. Then I installed Windows '98 and that is not giving any problem. My keyboard is also working fine for this platform. So what is the solution to use Windows2000.

R. Karthik

A. In order to solve this problem, please load fail-safe defaults in BIOS feature setup and then restart your system. You can enter the BIOS Feature setup by hitting del at the time of System booting. I hope this will solve your problem.

Q. I purchased a PC nearly 2 years ago. My configuration is: OS is Microsoft XP professional, Pentium III 733 MHz , 128 MB SD RAM , 48 x LG CD ROM, 1.44" FDD , 40 GB Seagate HDD , Intel 810 Chipset , 56 KBPS External GVC Modem. My problem is that my hard disk has two partitions C: and D: Both are of 18.64 GB. I have used 2.94 GB on C: but the drive properties show that 11.7 GB of hard disk has been used. Is this problem due to virus? Please tell me the solution. Also, please tell me an anti-virus suitable for Win XP.

Rahul, Hoshiarpur.

A. The first question related to your problem is how do you know that you have used only 2.94 GB hard disk space. Normally, you can know the disk space consumed and left from the properties of that particular disk and it is accurate. If you are calculating the disk space by taking into account the user files, then this calculation is wrong as now the latest operating system like the one mentioned by you consumes a lot of disk space. However, since the difference between the disk space consumed as per you and the disk properties is quite large, so the possibility of virus could also not be rules out. In this regard you should use a standard virus scanner like Norton or McAfee as both these are very good and are compatible with your operating system. After clean booting your system, you should scan your system well for any possibilities of virus in your system.

Q. I have Intel Celeron, Windows Me, 700 MHz and 15 GB hard drive PC. My problem is that I installed AOL 7.0. Afterwards, when I uninstalled it, all my shortcuts in Start menu were not there. I have to go to My Computer to open the program I want to. How can I bring them all back?

Sunny Brar, Canada

A. This error has been caused because either the PATH environment variable did not include the Windows folder, or the PATH environment variable was changed due to installation of AOL. Now in order to correct this problem, correct the "SET PATH=" statement in the local Autoexec.bat file and/or the network login script as necessary. Make sure that the "SET PATH=" statement includes the Windows folder (for example, C:\ Windows). Then, run Setup again. When you are prompted, choose the "Restore Windows files that are changed or corrupted" option. I am sure this will solve your problem.

Q. I have a problem while starting up of OS. I have Windows '98 Se on my Vintron elixir-P-III, 733 MHz, 128 MB RAM, FDD, 52x CD-ROM, multimedia keyboard and personal Web server installed with other heavy programs. The problem is when the Windows load, it give an error message box:Error Box Caption: 'evOlutiOn'Error Box Message: 'Error 10048 in function Bind Address already in use', But it doesn't give any further problems. It started when I reinstalled Visual Basic. Please let me know the reason and cure for this problem.

Inderpratap Tiwana, Patiala

A. You are right in assuming that this error is caused by the Visual Basic Enterprise edition. This error is generated when similar server applications are running concurrently on the same machine. This error occurs because the windows socket control does not have the ability to set the socket option SO_REUSEADDR. This option allows the socket to be bound to an address that is already in use. The only solution to this problem is not to use a specific local port. If you set the LocalPort property to Zero, Winsock will pick a random local port for you and use it until a close method is called on the WinSock Control.
