Nationals, Bengal Mumbai qualify for finals
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, March 28
Delhi Soccer Association (DSA) Senior Division League runners-up SAIL-Indian Nationals and Bengal Mumbai Football Club qualified for the final round of the Second Division National Football League at the
Ambedkar Stadium in the Capital on Thursday. Indian Nationals defeated Accountant General, Haryana (Chandigarh) 3-0 while Assam State Electricity Board (ASEB), Guwahati surprised Bengal Mumbai 2-0 on the concluding day’s matches.

But the defeat did not affect the chances of Bengal Mumbai’s entry into the final phase, to be held in Pondicherry in April.

Nationals finished on nine points from four matches to top the table while Bengal Mumbai also finished on nine points from four matches. Nationals, however, topped the group with a better goal difference.

In their last match, Nationals scored all the three goals in the second half. The Haryana team could not face up to the strong Nationals team, who were bolstered with the induction of Nigerians Augustino Okoro Ekuma and Cassius Akumu Owino.

Captain Yashpal scored the first goal (1-0) in the 62nd minute while Akumu Owino converted a penalty kick to make it 2-0.

The penalty was awarded by referee Ajit Kumar Deka of Assam when Nationals’ substitute player Gurjeet Singh was brought down by Haryana’s Harwinder Singh inside the box. Gurjeet Singh himself completed the tally (3-0) in the 85th minute.

In the other match, ASEB stunned Bengal Mumbai 2-0. The Assam team opened the account when they converted a penalty kick. They scored one more goal to ensure a smooth victory.

Star to telecast India-Windies series

New Delhi, March 28
Star Sports will telecast the five-Test cricket series and five-match One-Day International (ODI) series between India and West Indies, starting on April 11.

The Indians will be touring the Caribbean islands after winning the Test and one-day series against Zimbabwe. The last time India toured the West Indies in 1996-97, under the leadership of Sachin Tendulkar, India had lost the five-Test series 0-1 and the four-match one-day series 1-3. However, the scene is somewhat different now. Walsh, Ambrose, Bishop and Adams are off the scene, and Lara is not as consistent as he was then. Carl Hooper has come out of retirement but is not showing a resolute approach as captain. The present West Indian pace battery is also not as threatening as it was then. Their batting line-up too is not bubbling with confidence. Their recent failures against Sri Lanka and Pakistan have not done any good to their self-confidence either. Today’s West Indies team look more confused than convinced. But still, the tour will not be a cakewalk for the Indians. The Indians have to show their true mettle in alien conditions to make a match of it.

The Test matches will be played at Guyana (April 11 to 15), Trinidad (April 19 to 23), Barbados (May 2 to 6), Antigua (May 10 to 14) and Jamaica (May 18 to 22). The five-match One-Day International matches will be played at Jamaica (May 25 and 26), Barbados (May 29) and Trinidad (June 1 and 2). OSR
