Ludhiana, March 28
Mr Amarjit Singh Kahlon, senior athletics coach, Ludhiana, was given a warm send off by the staff of the Sports Department here yesterday. Mr Kahlon, a coach with the Sports Authority of India (SAI), who had been on deputation with the Punjab Sports Department, retired after putting in about 40 years of service.
Mr Kahlon also served for a couple of years at the teaching department of the National Institution of Sports in Patiala. He came to Ludhiana when the Sports Project Development Area (SPDA) scheme was launched and worked here for about eight years.
Mr Kahlon trained a number of
athletes who later went on to win laurels for the state, including Amandeep Kaur, an SAF Games champion (1989 to 1995). She was also the World Police Champion and a record holder at the National Women Festival; Gurpreet Singh, a gold medallist and record holder at the recently held 31st National Games in Punjab also trained under him. Gurpreet bettered the 37-year-old record in 110 m hurdles set by Gurbachan Singh Randhawa. Ajay Raj Singh, Jungjeet Singh and Deepinder Kaur, other trainees of Mr Kahlon, also stole the limelight during these games.
Speaking at the farewell function, Mr S. L. Lotey, District Sports Officer, lauded the services rendered by Mr Kahon in the field of athletics. He also highlighted Mr Kahlon’s role in the creation of a synthetic track at the Guru Nanak Stadium here.
