CME programme inaugurated

Chandigarh, March 23
Revolutionising the detection and characterisation of tumours in the body is the use of the new CT spiral scanner procured by the PGI recently. The scanner, which gives three dimensional images of the body organs within 30 seconds is on at the PGI.

This was stated by Dr Sudha Suri, Head, Department of Radiodiagnosis and Imaging, welcoming delegates to the two-day CME programme on Spiral CT and colour Doppler which started at the PGI here today.

Organised by the Department, the CME was inaugurated by the PGI Director, Dr SK Sharma.

Dr Sudha Suri also highlighted the other benefits of the multi-slice CT scanner and the advantages for patients without any extra cost. She also informed that the PGI would be getting another much better machine which will be able to show 16 slices of the particular part of the body in even lesser time.

Dr Kavita Garg, an eminent radiologist from Denver, USA, highlighted the role of multi-slice CT scanning in the early detection of lung cancer and pulmonary thromboembolism. She also discussed virtual colonoscopy with the help of mulitislice CT which can be done without the use of an endoscope. The technical advances in the scanner were discussed by Mr Sunil Khurana, M/S Wipro GE.

CT scan installed

Panchkula, March 23
A CT scan , mammography and computerised ECG machine have been installed at the Charitable Diagnostic Centre, being run by the Panchkula Welfare Trust at Manimajra.

This was stated by Mr Amar Nath Aggarwal and Mr Raj Kumar Gupta, both trustees of the trust, while addressing a press conference here today. They informed that these facilities would be made available to the patients at about 30 per cent prices less than the market price.

It is learnt that the diagnostic centre, which has been set up by a group of 15 philanthropists, is being run on a no-profit-no-loss basis. The centre already has an ultrasound, 30 MA X-ray machine with motorised table and clinical laboratory.

Rallyists zoom past first leg

Chandigarh, March 23
The much-talked about SJOBA Thunderbolt Sub-Himalayan Rally-2002 was today flagged off by Mr M. Ramsekhar, Deputy Commissioner, UT, from St John’s School, Sector 26. Nearly 76 rallyists, including 25 in four-wheeler section, today took off for their 500 km long journey to Koti Resorts and back to Chandigarh.

The rallyists passed through Rattewali, Morni, Lawasa Chowki, Gaura, Chail, Blakaiti and Mashobra. Tomorrow, the rallyists will set out on their journey at 7 a.m. and pass through Gannahati, Naya Nagar, Mallah, Chakki ka Mor, Masulkhana, Kona, Karodia and back to school premises. The top rallyists of the country, Sanjay Sikand, Rahul Khanna, Sunny Sidhu, Anil, G.J. Sahi and in women’s section, Tanisha took part in the rally.

Fine bowling by Jaswant

A superb bowling by Jaswant Rai, a former Himachal Ranji player, who claimed four wickets for just 19 runs, enabled the AG (Punjab) in beating Pace Cricket club by 129 runs in the VIth UT League Cricket Meet, which began at the Cricket Stadium, Sector 16, here on Saturday.

In other matches, Chandigarh Sports Club beat Indo-Dutch Systems by eight wickets; Satluj Coaching Centre beat DAV CC ‘A’ by one run; Sports Promoters XI beat Gallant Cricket Club by four wickets; Combined XI beat DSS XI by 88 runs; Maloya XI beat Gursadar XI by three wickets; Maa Saraswati Club beat Sun XI by eight wickets; and Panchkula CC beat Youngs XI by six wickets.

Earlier, a former Test cricketer Yograj Singh inaugurated the meet.

Bridge tourney begins

The Second Chandigarh Open All-India Bridge Championships began here today at the Defence Services Officers Institute, Sector 36. This three-day meet is being organised by the Chandigarh Bridge Association. Nearly 40 teams from various states are taking part in it. Earlier, the association had organised the First All-India Bridge meet in November, 2000.

Encroachments demolished

SAS Nagar, March 23
In the ongoing demolition drive against encroachments on public land, the demolition squad today removed as many as 160 encroachments in Phase 6 and Phase 7, here today.

An official of PUDA said a total of 786 houses in Phase 6 were surveyed and 52 encroachments were removed. In Phase 7, as many as 2,048 houses were surveyed and 108 encroachments were removed till the drive ended for the day. The drive would resume on Monday.
