Magic, puppet shows mark AIDS awareness drive

Chandigarh, March 19
The song and drama division of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has started an AIDS awareness programme in the city. Organised by the Ministry in collaboration with the Government Medical College and hospital, Sector, 32 artistes of the Song and Drama Division will be performing magic and puppet shows, songs focussing on the modes of spread of AIDS and its control in various parts of the city.

Dr Madhu Dalela, Regional Director, Song and drama division, is the coordinating officer of the awareness programme. The first such ‘nukkad’ programmes were performed in Colony Number 5 and Shaheed Bhagat Singh Colony, Sector 49. Carrying on with the awareness drive, the team of artistes-performed at Colony No. 4 today, generating substantial interest.

Lectures in Hindi on AIDS were also delivered by Dr Raj Bahadur, Medical Superintendent, GMCH.

Indian Express, Tribune in final

Chandigarh, March 19
The Indian Express and The Tribune teams will meet each other in the final of the first Inter-Media Cricket Tournament being played here at the Cricket Stadium, Sector 16.

In the first semi-final played today, The Indian Express boys prevailed upon The Times of India team. In the second semi-final played between The Tribune and Dainik Bhaskar, the match was awarded to the former, as it had to be abandoned mid way by the organisers due to protest lodged by the opponents on the decision of declaring a batsman run out by the Umpire.

According to Mr Rajesh Deol, coordinator of the meet, the invasion of the pitch by a group of supporters of a particular team led to this decision by the organisers. The Tribune scored 123 all out, while Dainik Bhaskar were 102 runs for eight wickets when the tie was put off.

DAV athletics meet begins

The two-day 44th Annual Athletics meet of DAV College, Sector 10, began to a colourful start amidst the tunes of the Chandigarh Police band here today.

In his welcome address, Mr S. Marriya, Principal of the college, said it was a proud moment that Sri Shadi Lal College trophy for efficiency and excellence in sports was conferred on this college. The chief guest, Justice D.V. Sehgal, Lok Pal, Punjab, congratulated young athletes for their achievements. Brig Kuldip Singh Chandpuri (retd) was also present.

Results:

400 m: Vikas Kumar 1, Harish Kumar 2, Rajesh Kumar 3. 1500 m; Vikas Kumar 1, Narinder Singh 2, Dharminder Singh 3. Triple Jump; Mayank Bhushan 1, Vikas Dhuria 2, Vikramjit Singh 3. Javelin Throw: Bikramjit Singh 1, Sunil Kumar 2, Harshal 3. Discus Throw; Bikramjit Singh 1, Sandeep Beniwal 2, Dharambir Singh 3.

Khalsa club win by 7 wkts

Khalsa Club defeated Panchkula Club by seven wickets in the First Cash Prize cricket tournament organised by Punjab Secretariat Cricket Club at SAS Nagar. In other matches of the day, Kalsi XI beat Domino Club by 23 runs, while Panther Club defeated DYFI by 30 runs. In yet another match, Mohinder XI beat Star XI by 44 runs.

Official recognition

The World Karate Confederation with its headquarters in Switzerland has given official recognition to the Sport Karate Federation of India headed by its president Ravinder Talwar and general secretary Ashwani Kumar. This was stated in a communique to Mr Ashwani Kumar by the World Karate Federation President, Dr Fritz Wenland.
