10 per cent adults in grip of heart ailments
Our Correspondent

Gurgaon, March 18
The incidence of heart disease is on the rise in India with around 10 per cent of adult population having Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) which is a major killer all over the world.

These remarks were made by Dr Suman Bhandari, senior consultant cardiologist, Escorts Heart Institute and Research Centre while addressing a seminar here on Sunday night.

Dr Bhandari revealed that in the world, 65 per cent deaths from the heart-related diseases come from the developing countries like India. If the ignorance persists, he predicted, India would have the largest number of casualties due to heart failure in 2020.

Besides major advances in medical management, non-surgical treatment of CAD has become an easy and safe treatment for opening up clogged arteries, said the doctor.

He added that the operation, which takes normally just an hour, is done under local anaesthesia with the patient being awake.

Addressing the doctors about the new and tested methods of treatment, Dr Atul Bhatia, senior consultant cardiologist of Escort Heart Institute, said that the implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICD) which were being used in India for long is becoming sophisticated, smaller and cheaper day by day.

If the patient is brought to the operation theatre on time, an ICD can start the heart through electrical shocks that defibrillate and regularise a quivering heart, said Dr Bhatia.

The seminar, organised jointly by the Association of Physicians of India (API), Gurgaon Chapter and Escorts Heart Institute and Research Centre, New Delhi was sponsored by EWF Pharmaceuticals Ltd.

Welcoming the guests and the doctors, Dr Jaibhagwan Bansal, chairman API, Gurgaon said that such talks even enlightened the doctors which thereby could treat the patients using the latest technologies.
