Hamid Karzai

THE interim president of Afghanistan, Hamid Karzai, was in Delhi recently to seek India’s partnership in rebuilding Afghanistan’s security establishment and economic infrastructure. Karzai was here on his first official visit since he took up office. Fluent in English and with a friendly demeanour and attitude, Karzai met many leaders of our country, including the leader of the opposition Sonia Gandhi,. He also paid a visit to Rajghat to pay homage to the Father of the Nation and spent a few minutes looking around the panorama of Rajghat. It is here that I was able to sketch him in his usual attire — fez cap and a long gown. He did not hesitate to affix his signature to the sketch when I asked him to. He signed in his mother tongue, Afghani, and the entire interaction lasted only for a few minutes. Much to the surprise of everyone present, it was extremely casual.
