Auction yields Rs 3.31 lakh
Our Correspondent

Dera Bassi, March 13
The Municipal Council here today net a sum of Rs 3.31 lakh after auctioning eight shops in the local bus stand complex. Compared to last year, the auction fetched an extra sum of Rs 4000 this time.

The bid went in favour of Mr Satya Pal Baghi, who had got the contract last year also. The shops have further been rented out to shopkeepers by the contractor on an yearly basis.

Meanwhile, talking to Chandigarh Tribune, shopkeepers who have been running the shops for the past many years, complained that they were suffering losses because of high-handedness of the civic body.

They alleged that the major reason for losses was that very few local buses plying on the Chandigarh-Ambala local route stopped at the bus stand. Instead of entering the bus stand, drivers pay entry fee at temporary bus stop on the Chandigarh-Ambala highway and lift passengers from outside the stoppage. This not only causes congestion on the main road making it accident-prone but also affects business of shopkeepers.

Some shopkeepers said that they had made their representation to the transport authorities and the authorities of the civic body but their efforts had proved futile.
