Mikhail Gorbachev

THE former president of earstwhile Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev was on a state visit to Delhi. In Delhi he signed a number of agreements between India and Soviet Union to boost the bilateral relations between the two countries. He met many leaders of our country belonging to various parties and exchanged views with them.

During his short stay in Delhi he visited some of the historical places and mingled with the crowd who were eager to see him.

It was during this time, that I chanced to meet him with the help of the departments of security and protocol. I had met a picture of him and I was eager to procure his signature on it. As I approached him, his security guard would not let me go near him.

However, it was made possible with the help of our officials who were conducting him from place to place.

He had a glance at the picture when I showed it to him. He laughed and showed keen interest in it and immediately responded to my request of signing the sketch.
