Q. I have an Intel Pentium III, 800 MHz Processor, 128 MB SD RAM, 20 GB Hard Disk, 15"colour LG monitor, 52x Samsung CD ROM. My question is if I want to cut some part from the movie or suppose a song what software to use. Please tell me the software available for that so that I can download it from the Internet. Please tell me the Website also.

— Bhavdeep Singh Ahuja, Ludhiana

A. There are many video editing software available on the Internet, using which you can edit a video file. You can search the Web for such video editing software. I know of one good software videostudio6, this is a trial version and can be downloaded from www.ulead.com/download/download.htm. On this site you can find lots of other video editing software, which you can download for trial purposes.

Q. I have bought a new system and am facing problem as the screen of my monitor does not remain stable. With the movement of mouse pointer it shows instability and on the corners of the screen I can see black lines when I move my pointer there. I have kept the UPS under the table and only one of the small speakers is on the table. Please tell me, whether it is a hardware problem or does it need some settings. Secondly, I am concerned about my system’s virus protection. I have installed Norton anti-virus 2001, but I downloaded some data and pictures from the Internet and took these to my PC by copying these in floppy. Does the system need any further protection? If yes, then what to do and how? I also want to know what care should I take while downloading pictures, articles from the Internet so as to keep myself away from new or dangerous viruses.

Amit Jindal, Sunam

A. In order to solve this problem, first of all you must ensure that your monitor is away from any strong magnetic field. The UPS or the speaker mentioned by you can also cause this problem in certain cases. Therefore you can try keeping them away from your monitor. Another possible reason responsible for this problem could be the quality of your UPS. If it is a pure square wave generating UPS, then this kind of problem could also occur. However, after trying these options, you can also reinstall the VGA/AGP driver again after uninstalling the current driver. While loading the driver, you should be careful to note that you are using the correct version of the driver. Then you should configure it correctly in the display properties and choose the optimal refresh rate and do not choose smoothing the icons, and use maximum colours in icons. Now on restarting your problem would be solved. However, if the problem still persist, then you should reduce the hardware accelerator pointer bar from the maximum to one point left. This should solve your problem. Even if this does not solve your problem, then you must consult your hardware vendor. Regarding your next question, you should not be over cautious about the security. If you download something from the Internet, you can get it checked by the Norton Antivirus. Similarly, if you use afloppy, then also you should thoroughly check with the virus scanner before copying files from it. This much protection is sufficient.

Q. I have Compaq Presario. My system configuration is Pentium III, 866 MHz, 64 MB RAM with Windows Me as an operating system. I have four queries. 1. I have 20 GB hard disk having two partitions of 17.6 GB as C: and 994 MB as D:. Now I want to know that is it good to have only two partitions out of which one partition has so less space as compared to the other partition and if it is not good then why the world wide companies like Compaq have provided with these kind of partitions.

2. Can the speed of my system increase if I increase my RAM and if it will increase then why Compaq has provided only 64 MB RAM with most of its models. What will it cost to buy a 64 MB RAM slot?

3. I have installed the Internet usage monitor software from January 2002 edition of chip CD. This software counts the hours of the Internet usage and also gives the money spent according to the details given by the user. It works fine for one or two days, but now whenever I try to open it, it gives the error message as "Run-time error ‘13’.Type

mismatch." I once reinstalled it but it still gives the same error message. Please help. 4. My Internet explorer takes some time to open while all my other applications do not take so much time to open.

Aditya Rana, Hoshiarpur (Punjab)

A. Regarding your first query, the size of partitions is very subjective and may depend on case to case. For example if you wish to have two operating systems on your PC, then this kind of partition mentioned by you will not be a good idea. But if you just want to use your partition for storing selected files, then having a small partition is OK. Basically it is the use of the computer, which would determine what is the right partition strategy and there is no universal formula. Regarding your second question, 64 MB RAM is the minimum and also sufficient memory for most of the application. However, 128 MB is good and 256 MB is even better. The size of memory would also depend upon the use of the computer, but higher RAM is always a good idea. Branded machines like Compaq comes with different configuration and thus they cannot be blamed for using 64 memory. Moreover, with more memory the speed of the computer does not increase. Only the performance gets better in terms of faster access and better operations. Regarding your query about the Internet explorer, you must clear the temporary Internet files and also the cache memory. Also, use the blank page in place of the default homepage, which would improve the performance of Internet explorer.

Q. I have problem with my PC. The booting speed of my PC is very slow. It takes more than 2 minutes while booting. Configuration is PCS machine with 64 RAM, 20GB HDD, 750 MHz, Windows ’98 as an operating system. Please tell me what should I do to increase booting speed.

Sandeep Singh, Amritsar

A. There could be many reasons for the slower booting process. The best way is to start the PC by step-by-step confirmation and identify the process, which takes a lot of time. The procedure for doing it simple. Just click and hold down the Crtl key while booting your PC and the computer will automatically boot to the DOS screen, giving a 6-boot option. Choose the option of step-by-step confirmation and then check the process, which is slowing down your PC. Talking in general, do not use the drivers, which you may not require and also remove all shareware and other unimportant software from the boot up list as windows start these programs also while booting, which takes a lot of time while booting. The third option is to remove loading of anti-virus software when the Windows restarts and this will further improve the speed of loading the Windows. However, the best solution to this problem is step-by-step confirmation as mentioned above.

Q. I have an Intel Pentium III, 866 MHz, 20 GB hard disk, Samsung CD ROM, Windows Me installed. A few days ago, I reinstalled Windows. Now while playing a game Commando 2, the system halts giving the message: "Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer." Secondly, I am not satisfied with the speed of my PC. I regularly perform scandisk and defrag. Thirdly from which site can I download the games free?

Paras, Patiala.

A. There could be many reasons for the Windows protection error. However for the exact solution of your problem you must mention the exact error message, which is a must for the exact solution. So, please write back the exact and full message for the solution of your problem. Regarding your second question related to the speed of your computer, I would say that you should not have too many games on your PC as they drain out a lot of system resources. Moreover, you should also assign a higher value in the paging file size, which would boost the performance of your PC. Installing higher RAM would also be a good idea to boost the performance of your PC. Also you should keep your system free of clutter like junk *.tmp files, internet temporary file, files in recycle bin, and disk and memory cache files, as keeping these files clear would also boost the performance of your PC.
