V. Shantaram
by Ranga

"THANK you... you have done well", were V.Shantaram’s words when I met him in Delhi with the sketch I had drawn of him. He promptly put his signature on it. This was in the year 1986. He was staying at a five star hotel with his family and as I entered his room, he was gracious enough to make me sit by his side as he went through some of my collections of sketches and cartoons of personalities. He showed great interest in them and asked me whether I had ever drawn him. I told him that I had only come with the purpose of sketching him and he immediately asked me to make myself comfortable as I drew a picture of him. Soon, the sketch was ready and he was delighted to see himself in black and white. He took the sketch and called his friends to take a look at it. I made another sketch of him for his personal collection which he was pleased to acknowledge.
