Dream Theme

Dreaming of fish
Vinaya Katoch Manhas

FISH, as such, is a symbol of fertility and is commonly found motif in Indian homes during festivals. Although water is a more common symbol in dreams and fish live only in water, yet in dreams rarely do we connect the two with each other. Should the person dream of fish, for instance a shark chasing him, he will rarely notice the water in the background.

According to Indian thought, to dream of a tasty dish of fish which you enjoy is a good sign. You will be able to fulfil your professional goals. To a great extent you shall become independent. To see a fish slip from your hands and get back into the water is not a good sign as it means that your importance in friendship and matters of love shall decline. Should you see that you attempt to catch fish but are unable to do so then you shall not be able to gain much success in any sphere of life. To see a big fish like a shark attack you is considered unlucky. Such a dream warns you to beware of a strong enemy who is dangerous for you. Should you see it eating or swallowing you it is a worse omen as it foretells your destruction at the hands of your enemies.

As per western thought to see fish in clear water streams means that you shall find favour with the rich and powerful. Seeing dead fish signifies loss of wealth and power. For a young woman to see a fish indicates romantic times head. Should you see yourself wading in water to catch fish it means that you shall gain in wealth and personal affairs through your own hard work. Eating fish denotes warm and lasting attachments. A visit to a fish market in dreams is a harbinger of competence and pleasure. To see decayed fish, foretells distress in the guise of happiness coming your way.

Psychologically speaking, fish connects us with the emotional side of our personalities, with our capability of being wise without having to use strategies. We in our actions and responses shall be guided more by our instincts and emotions rather than analysing it. The collective unconscious, as Jung termed it, is represented by fish in our dreams. It refers to those aspects of life that all people share, the common experience, awareness and knowledge which we all have.

Fish also signify temporal and spiritual power. When seen as two fish swimming in opposite directions, it is recognised as the astrological sign of Pisces.

A man of 30 often dreamt of going to a fish market to buy fish but when he came back they had turned black and were not fit to be cooked. Yet when he brought them they were totally fresh. Such a dream warns the man to beware of the habit of being impulsive as it has got him into trouble in the past and can again do so in the future.
