Looking back

Marathon is a small village in Greece situated about 40 km from Athens. Here in 490 B.C a fierce battle took place. In this the Greek forces led by Militiades defeated the Persian army of Dartus. It is believed that Militiades sent the runner Pheidippides to Athens with the news of the victory. He ran so fast that after he delivered the message, he fell dead to the ground. Today a marathon refers to a foot race of 42.2 km
