Colin Powell
by Ranga

"FORGET it. You will not be able to succeed this time in meeting General Colin Powell, the U.S. Secretary of State as he has a tight security cover" is what some officials who were looking after the engagements of General Powell told me as I approached them for finding a way out. However, on that day he was addressing a joint press conference with Jaswant Singh, Minister for External Affairs in a five-star hotel in Delhi.

I managed to occupy a front seat even though it was far away from the dais from where General Powell was to address the audience. As the Press Conference came to a close, I drew the attention of Mr Jaswant Singh by holding high the picture I had drawn of General Powell. He responded with a gesture which helped me to rush towards him before the security could intervene and passed on the sketch to General Powell for giving his autograph over it. It all happened in a flash of a second. General Powell signed over it before he took leave of the gathering. He, quite happy to receive a similar copy of his picture, said "Thank you", with a smile.
