Looking back

Tally was a stick which was formerly used in keeping accounts. The stick was split longitudinally into two pieces, one of which was kept by the creditor, the other by the debtor. The transactions were recorded by cutting notches in the two pieces, which were placed side by side for ensuring the accuracy of the account. Tallies were preserved by the exchequer until 1834, and it was owing to the over-heating of a stove in which the old sticks were being destroyed, that the Houses of Parliament were burnt down that year.
