Q. I have an assembled PC of configuration of processor PIV 1.4 GHz motherboard, D850GB Intel RAM, 128 MB RDRAM display (TV out), Riva TNT2 32 MB RAM Motorola internal modem, 4channel Yamaha sound card, 40 GB Barracuda HDD 52x max LG CD-ROM. My problems are - My PC shuts down automatically (some times after 20 minutes, sometimes after an hour) while the keyboard and green light on the motherboard remains on and to start the PC again. I have to switch off the main power supply (till the lights turn off) and switch it on again. Secondly, I have installed Active Monitor from the Intel CD now. Whenever I switch on my PC, it displays the warning that System Zone 1 is working at the temperature higher than recommended and the details show temperature in the range 73 to 79 Celsius. I am using Windows '98 OS and CVT. Sachin Sharma, Kulu, HP A. From the description of the problem mentioned by you, it is clearly evident that the problem in the PC is being caused by the high temperature of the processor. It should normally be less than 60 Celsius, whereas in your case, the temperature is in the range of 73 to 79 degrees, which is alarming and a big cause of concern. For the possible solution of your problem, please make sure that you have used the recommended size of the heat sink and the CPU fan and also thermal compound has been applied on the upper side of the processor to bring down the heat. Also please install chassis fan in the PC to blow out the hot air from it. Installing 2 chassis fans would be a good idea and 1 fan is being put at the front side, whereas the second fan is being put at the backside. The frontside fan blows the air in, while the backside fan blows the air out. Remember, the high temperature of the processor could prove fatal for the computer and this problem needs to be addressed immediately. However, if you think that all above mentioned methods have been taken into consideration, then contact your hardware vendor for the possible replacement of the processor, else this problem would continue to occur and become worse as the summers will arrive, provided your CPU manages to survive till then. All you need to do is change the association of the program with the specific file types, which you have been using. For changing the association of the file types, click on Start > Programs > Windows Explorer. Now select a file whose file format association you want to change. For example, if you want to change the file format association for all gif files, select a gif file. Now press Shift+F10, or Shift+right-click the file you selected. Now choose Open With from the pop-up menu. In the Open With dialog box, select the application with which you want to associate the file format. If the application isn't listed, click Other and then locate the desired application. Now select the option labeled "Always use this program to open files of this type," and click OK. Now I have installed Office XP in windows XP professional with the same CD, but now when I try to configure microphone I get the message, "The microphone you are using does not support gain adjustments." I have checked the microphone settings in control panel. My microphone is working properly. It is also working in sound recorder. My second problem is about Windows XP. How can we make Windows XP Java enabled? I always get the message "Download Java virtual machine," when I try to open any Web page containing Java. Rohit Gupta, Panchkula A. Please check the Audio
drivers in the device manager under the Systems tab in control panel. If
the drivers for Windows XP are not installed, this error occurs. It may
also happen in case of upgradation, the aforesaid driver has not been
updated, therefore you get this problem. You can reload or first
uninstall and then reinstall the particular Audio driver with the
correct version for Windows XP and can thus correct the problem.
Regarding your second problem you can download the Java virtual machine
