Satyajit Ray
by Ranga

THE veteran filmmaker, who shot into fame for his film Pather Panchali was in Delhi in connection with the film festival in January 1987. He was busy in giving an interview to a film magazine. It was at the time I barged into the room in Siri Fort, where the interview was taking place. I stood in a corner to sketch him and by the time the interview was over the picture was ready and I slowly moved towards him to get it signed by him.

He was surrounded by many cameramen who were busy in taking several shots of him and I awaited my turn. Soon his attention was drawn towards the picture and he showed his interest in having a look at it. He took it and kept it without returning it to me with his signature. After communicating that it was meant for his signature, he returned it with the condition that he should have a similar one.

No doubt his condition was fulfilled and his autographed sketch of his has become one of the most sought after pictures.
