Damanjeet Singh, SAS Nagar A. This is a typical Internet Explorer problem and can be caused by several factors. However, the best possible solution to this problem is to run scandisk in thorough mode followed by defrag. Also, this problem in many cases is caused if there is little hard disk space left in the system. So, for the possible solution, you have to essentially clean up the system. You must free up resources by eliminating junk files, excess fonts, games and other memory resident programs from your system and keep at least 20 per cent of the hard disk free. Once you do this, then many of the problems including this one will disappear. You can also work out two more settings, which can help in eliminating this type of error by boosting the performance. Under the first setting, increase the page file size to at least 2.5 times of the RAM, though higher would be better provided there is sufficient free hard disk space in the system. Also reduce the space reserved for the Recycle bin. Under the second setting, change the typical role of the computer to Network server from desktop. Hope this would solve your problem. Q. I want to transfer some files from my computer to my friend's computer. I don't want to use floppy, zip drive, direct cable connection and to put out my hard disk but I have an internal modem. I want to transfer it through the Internet without attachment to e-mail. Please, tell me the whole procedure? Vineshwar Gupta, Rajpura A. You can easily transfer the files over the Internet. There are several options for it. However, the most common options are sending the files through Yahoo! messenger or ICQ. There is a file transfer facility in both these software and you can easily do it directly to the other person, without attaching as an e-mail. Other options of transferring the files directly is to use the Windows default Hyper Terminal facility, but this will be done without the Internet and making a direct dial up connection to the other computer. Q. I have an assembled PC, P III, 550 MHz, 64 MB RAM, Intel 810 motherboard with onboard sound and graphics card,10.2GB Seagate hard disk, 56 KBPS Internal modem and Samsung CD ROM. I have Windows '98 SE operating system with McAfee anti virus 5.12 and Norton Utilities 2001 installed on it with various other utilities. I have two problems: 1. When I start my PC, the CPU usage shown by the Norton System Doctor is very high, i.e. 98-100 per cent. Then I shut down various processes and then it come down to 0 per cent. After some time the system hangs whenever I start a movie or even when I open jpg files. I can't even use MS Outlook 2000 as the system hangs. I have to restart and connect again. 2. I installed McAfee anti virus with safe and sound facility, which automatically backs up the hard disk. Due to some unavoidable reasons, I have to uninstall anti-virus and install it again. Now an unknown folder is formed which was earlier called safe and sound in My Computer. Whenever I run Norton Speed Disk it shows a high severity error saying, "Some Sectors not found, run Norton Disk Doctor." When NDD is run, it corrects the problem but the unidentified still remains there. Every time I run Speed Disk the same problem arises. Kindly help as my PC has become a 'Restarting Machine'. Parveen, Karnal A. One thing in particular about the anti-virus software is that they reduce the performance of the system. I recommend that unless, you download a lot of material from the Internet or use outside material either from floppies or CDs, only then you should use the high security settings including running virus scanner at the bootup and loading it while starting Windows etc. Otherwise, you should change the default settings to normal. This will at first enhance the performance of your system. As far as the heavy processor usage is concerned, it could be primarily be due to the anti-virus program that is busy scanning files for virus. So, please remove one of the anti-virus program for the possible solution of your problem. Regarding your second problem, you should run scandisk in thorough mode, followed by defrag just to make sure that some sectors not found error is not related to the hard disk and ruling out the problems related to the bad sectors. If there is no problem found in your hard disk, then you can ignore this problem. I hope these measures will make your computer from 'Restarting Machine' to a 'Stable Machine'. Q. I have a PC with Pentium III Genuine Intel 667 MHz processor, 56 MB RAM, SiS 630 chipset motherboard, 20 GB HDD with 3 partitions, C: D: & E:, 16" colour monitor (Samsung), OS is Win Me on C: , Office 2000. The speed of my system remains slow. I have performed thorough scanning and defragmentation, no bad sectors were present on my hard disk but that has not increased the speed. Clearing away all temporary files and undesirable window components also has not helped. Following your one of the previous issues, I also tried to search for [Vcache] disk driver but could not change the maximum and minimum values for the same, as on doing so it gave a warning message that "the optimum settings of your system will be lost and Windows may not restart again, change the setting only if you are sure of your actions." Due to this I had to click on No tab and the default values of Maximum = 3540 & Minimum = 0 still holds there. In addition to that I have started facing another problem that the movement of mouse pointer slows down desperately in the Windows while its motion is quite smooth on the desktop. Kindly help me out of this situation and help me restore the original speed of my PC. Also you talked about Smart drivers. What is that? And should they be enabled or disabled and how? My PC has disabled Smart drivers. Monika, Chandigarh A. Regarding your first problem, you can still take your own settings for the Vcache despite the warning by computer. However, for the minimum value you can take minimum 500 MB, whereas the maximum value is normally the maximum hard disk space available in the partition. Ideally you can take the default Maximum figure, but anything lower than the maximum value will also serve the purpose. However, it should not be lower than the minimum value. The warning by Windows is by default and does not represent any error. Regarding your second problem, if you are using the scroll mouse, then you should uninstall the driver of the mouse and after rebooting the system, you should install it again. Whereas in case of normal mouse, click on control panel>Settings>Device manager and from there uninstall the mouse. Now reboot your system and then Windows will detect the mouse automatically. Let Windows install it afresh for you. This way your problem will be solved. Also, please do not use any scheme for your mouse and pointers as it can also cause the problem mentioned by you. I hope that by taking these measures, your problems would be solved. Q. I have a P III 933 MHz, 128 MB RAM, 20 GB HDD and Windows '98 operating system. Sometimes my volume control does not open. If I restart my system then sometimes it opens. Please suggest the solution Ashu, Ropar A. For the possible solution of your problem, first of all disable any other volume mixer you have installed on your system as the clash of its system files with the windows default volume control can cause this problem. Then click on Control Panel> Settings> Device manager and click on the sound controller menu. Now reinstall the driver for the sound controllers and this will solve your problem. Q. I have a branded PC (Compaq Presario) whose configuration is P III 866 Mhz., 64 MB RAM, 20 GB Hard Disk, 48X CD-ROM, 1.44 MB FDD and Windows Me as Operating System. My problem is that whenever I run ScanDisk in Thorough mode on my C: Drive, following message appears on the screen after sometime: "ScanDisk has restarted 10 times because Windows or another program has been writing to this drive. Quitting some running programs may help ScanDisk to finish sooner." In actual there is no program (not even the anti-virus, McAfee) running. Please suggest me some way so that I can ScanDisk my drives. Karan Dhanoa A. Other than, the antivirus software, some other programs like screen-savers and ping options can also cause this problem. Disable any screen saver, which might be running on your computer and also disable the ping option to solve this problem. Also, if you are using any Video wallpaper, then you should change it to none for effectively carrying out the scan disk. However, if this does not solve your problem, then you can run the windows in safe mode and then try to run the scandisk. Q. I have HCL PC with Windows Me. I have three partitions on my hard disk. I had kept FIFA game on D: drive but after formatting C drive I am not able to play FIFA game which is in D drive, as I don't have the set up of FIFA. I am not able to reinstall it. Please tell me a solution to this problem and tell me the name of software by which I can clear the unused entries in the registry editor. Guriqbal Singh, Chandigarh A. If you are installing a
program then despite the fact that you may install it on some other
drive, it always stores the system files, which are critical for running
the application on drive, where the operating system is loaded. Now
since you have formatted the C: drive, where the system files of this
program was loaded, the critical files are gone, which would stop
running this application. Also by formatting the drive, your older
registry is automatically deleted. However if you wanted to check the
registry then you can use software like registry cleaner for trimming
the registry further. |
