All set for R-Day celebrations

With just one day left for the Republic Day celebrations, all preparations seem to be over for a district-level function to be held on the grounds of SCD Government College.

Several rehearsals for the parade, flag hoisting, PT show and cultural items to be presented by school and college students have been held. Elaborate security arrangements have been made by the police.

The 95-minute programme is scheduled to begin with march past by NCC students from over eight colleges of the city, including the Master Tara Singh Memorial College for Women, the Khalsa College for Women, Government College for Women, SCD the Government College, GGN Khalsa College and Arya College. This will be followed by flag hoisting by Captain Kanwaljit Singh, Finance Minister, Punjab, who would be the chief guest on the occasion.

Over 2400 children from government and aided schools will present a colourful PT show. Various government departments like the Rural Development department and milk plant will present a tableaux of their yearly activities. Students from five to six schools will put up a cultural show. A team of 60 students from the middle section of Atam Public School will present “Hamari Hinduvta” in which cultural diversity in various states of India will be presented.

A girls’ team from DAV Public School will present kalbelia, a tribal dance, while BCM Arya Senior Secondary School girls would perform a dupatta dance. The team from Guru Ram Dass Academy will put up an impressive show of judo. The cultural items will conclude with bhangra by boys from the host college and giddha by school as well as college students.

Talking to Ludhiana Tribune, Mr A.K. Sinha, ADC (Development), who is also coordinator of the function, said that on the occasion, sewing machines and tricycles would be distributed among the needy and handicapped persons by the Red Cross Society. He said that invitations had been sent to over 100 families of the Kargil martyrs who would be honoured.

PAU student honoured

Ludhiana, January 24
Ms Gungeet, a final year student of B.Sc. (home science) of the College of Home Science, Punjab Agricultural University, has been awarded “Role Model Award” by the Swami Vivekanand Study Circle.

The society had selected one student from each from different educational institutions for this award. Ms Gungeet has been chosen for this award on the basis of her academic achievements and achievements in sports, extra-curricular activities and social service.

She has won three gold medals and one silver medal in the all-India inter-agricultural universities sports meets during the last two years. She has also participated in the Republic Day Parade at New Delhi during her school days.

She was an active participant in the inter-college and inter-university youth festivals in various cultural events.

Dances, skit mark festival

Ludhiana, January 24
Contests for individual dances, skit, dumb charades, mock press conference, cartooning and ‘rangoli’ marked the second day of ‘Expressions’, a three-day cultural festival, for students of BBA, BCA and MCA of the Guru Nanak Institute of Management and Technology, Model Town, here today.

In the individual dance performances, girls enthralled the audience with their delightful performances. Priya from BCA IV danced on the song, ‘Mujhe rang de’, Ridhi from BCA II danced on ‘You are my soniya’ and Konika from BCA IV danced on the music of ‘Bole chudiyan tera kangana’.

MCA students presented skit on the theme ‘Naari’, while Savneet, Raman and Chandni, all BBA IV students, mimicked ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’. Aabha, Vidhi, Nancy and Harman, all from BCA IV, presented a skit ‘Badalte Mapdand’.

In cartooning contest, students caricatured political figures to their best. Bright coloured ‘rangoli’ designs adorned halls of the institute. Dr A.S. Bansal, Director, appreciated the interest of the students and said contests for group dances, debate, extempore, collage and ‘mehndi’ would be held tomorrow.
