C. Rajagopalachari (Rajaji)

"AM I not a handsome old man?" So wrote C.Rajagopalachari, popularly known as Rajaji, the former Governor General of India on the sketch drawn by me. I met him at Chennai (Madras) when he was resting at his modest house at Kilpauk,a suburb guarded by a lone constable at the gate. In those days terrorism was unheard of and meeting him without any appointment was however not difficult. As I approached the main door of his house, his elderly daughter recognised me through the window and opened the door. Rajaji was resting on his cot and as he saw me, he got up and offered me a chair to sit and talk for a while. During the course of my talk with hin, I drew his sketch and asked for his autograph over it. He took the sketch and conducted me to his study room where he went through the sketch minutely and affixed his signature with the remark mentioned earlier. This was in the year 1972, October 10.
