Nehru House excel in athletics meet

Ludhiana, January 12
Nehru House in the boys section and Tagore House in the girls section emerged victorious in the 4x100 m relay race in the annual athletics meet of the Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School, Bhai Randhir Randhir Singh Nagar, Ludhiana, held on Friday. Mr Didar Singh, a 1982 Barcelona Olympics hockey star, inaugurated the meet and also gave away prizes to the participants.

Sacred Heart School finish 4th

Paddlers of the Sacred Heart Convent Senior Secondary School, Sarabha Nagar, Ludhiana have brought laurels by winning the fourth position in the boys section (u-19) of the National CBSE Table Tennis Championship held at Bhillai recently. According to a press note issued by Mr O.S. Nagi, sports in charge of the school, their was the only team from cluster XII CBSE which represented Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir region in this tennis meet.

As many as 26 teams from all over the country and from gulf countries participated in the meet. The school team which finished third in the last edition of this meet reached the semi-finals in all age groups of boys and girls sections.

The Sacred Heart team was placed in pool B along with teams from Padma Sheshadri School, Chennai, and India International School, Riadh. Sacred Heart team topped their pool by overwhelming their rivals 3-0.

In the knock-out stage, Sacred Heart School were seeded second where in the quarter final they outplayed Chinmey School, Bhokaro 3-0 enroute to the last four stage. And in the semifinal tie against Mayur School, Ajmer, which is being trained by a Chinese coach at Sports Petroleum Academy, they went down fighting 2-3 while in the second semi-final, runners up of pool B, Padma Sheshdari School scored an upset victory over the last years’ champions, Hans Raj School, Delhi. In the final, Mayur School blanked Padma Sheshdari School 3-0.

In the match for hardline cup, Sacred Heart School team after waging a good fight lost at 2-3 against Hans Raj School, Delhi. In the individual category, Disney Rayait of Sacred Heart School earned the fourth rank in the boys (u-19) category, the note said.

Sisters selected for skating meet

Two sisters, Suranshi Thukral and Rinthikha Thukral, students of Sacred Heart Convent Senior Secondary School, Sarabha Nagar, Ludhiana, have been selected for the National Skating Championship scheduled to be held at Vishakhapatnam from January 15 to 20.

According to a press note, on the basis of their performance during trials conducted by the Roller Skating Federation of India at Patiala on December 15 and 16, Suranshi and Rinthikha have been selected.

Suranshi, competing in the age group 8 to 10, finished second during the last CBSE National Games. She emerged winner in Rink Race I and Rink Race II, while finished second in Road Race.

Suranshi’s younger sister, Rinthikha, who participated in U-6 category, won Rink Race I, finished runners-up in Road Race and got the third position in Rink Race II.

Function to honour sportspersons

Sportspersons, who have got positions in the Senior Secondary Schools Tournament during the current academic session, will be honoured on February 2. Giving this information, Mr Gurmeet Singh, general secretary, Senior Secondary Schools Tournament Committee, said a function would be held at AS Senior Secondary School, Khanna. Dr Jagtar Singh, Director Public Instructions, will give away prizes, while Ms Usha Sidhu, District Education Officer (Secondary), will preside over it.

Police to promote hockey teams

Ahmedgarh, January 12
The Jagraon police has decided to promote 40 hockey teams in rural areas of the district and to provide services of expert coaches to those educational institutions who want to introduce regular hockey for their students.

This was disclosed by Mr Balkar Singh Sandhu, SSP, Jagraon, at the inaugural function of annual sports meet of Anand Isher Senior Secondary School.

Addressing the gathering, Mr Sandhu said the sports kept the youth away from addiction and related evils. He prevailed upon the students to have high targets needing extra effort on their part. He stated that civilians were the sense organs of the Police Department, which could not work without their cooperation.
