135 examined at medical camp

Chandigarh, January 6
A free medical camp was organised on the campus of Bal Niketan Senior Model School, Sector 37, here today, in which 135 patients were examined for hypertension and diabetes, besides general check-up.

Dr Jyotika Kapoor examined the patients. Over 150 patients took various tests, which included that of haemoglobin, blood sugar, serum, cholesterol, blood grouping and blood pressure.

The school was also introducing vocational courses in medical laboratory technology and x-ray technology. A charitable centre would work on a no-profit, no-loss basis and impart practical training to the students, the principal said.

The panel of consultants for this charitable institute included Dr Rajeev Kapoor and Dr Jyotika. It would begin functioning from tomorrow and would run from 7:30 am to 5 pm. The facility for x-ray, ultrasound and ECG would be provided in collaboration with the doctors at their clinics. A charitable clinic for hypertension, diabetes and general consultation would be held every Saturday from 9:30 am to 1 pm.

2001 saw Dev Samaj girls in top form

IS Dev Samaj Girls Senior Secondary School is one of the few schools which have done exceedingly well during the year 2001 in various disciplined sports. Earlier, the school competed in events of basketball only. Its Principal Ms Sumati Kanwar, said she was herself a famous basketball player, but after leaving a mark in the sport, she always wanted to focus on other sports. Ms Kanwar opined that the girls who were good in sports were also doing well in studies.

In basketball, the school won first place in UT Mini State meet, while in Chandigarh Junior basketball Meet, CBSE basketball meet for under-19 and in IS Invitational Meet the school team secured third place. Five girls of the school — Navneet, Harpreet, Manpreet, Amandeep and Shweta — were selected to represent the UT in the Junior National meet held at Chhatisgarh. In sub-junior section, four girls — Sumeet, Chandni, Meena and Poonam — were members of the UT team for the National sub-junior meet at Kapurthala. The school team also won a place in the inter-school under-19 meet.

In kho-kho, the school team won first place in the UT sub-junior Kho-Kho meet, while in CBSE Kho-Kho meet it secured second place and again in under-17 inter-school Kho-Kho meet the school team won first place. The players of the school also represented in the National Games.

Ms Sumati said in table tennis Amarpreet Kaur and Deepinderjeet helped the school win the UT inter-school under-19 trophy. Deepinderjeet also won first place in the junior girls section, while Amarpreet got third place in the women section.

In Judo it won the overall title in the under-14, under-17 and under-19 sections thus making a clean sweep. The gold medal was bagged by Pooja, Yashoda, Sarita, Pooja Jalan, Sapna and Shilpi, while Vandana, Poonam, Ravneet secured silver medal and Tarneet, Kiwi, Neelam and Rekha took bronze medal. Five judokas of the school also took part in the National School Judo meet.

Ms Kanwar said the school won honours in ball badminton, and cricket as well. The school won both the UT inter-school under-19 cricket and the ball badminton meet. Monu Dhiman and K. Smiti represented Indian junior ball badminton team for the Indo-Nepal series held at Nepal early this year.

Rajeshwari wins single scull event

Chandigarh, January 6
Rajeshwari cornered glory in the single scull event of the Chandigarh State Rowing Championships, 2002, which concluded here this evening at the Sukhna Lake. Mr T.C. Gupta, President, Chandigarh Rowing Association, gave away the prizes.

Col M. Berry, General Manager, Lake Club, announced that a rowing regetta will be organised every two months and rolling trophies given to winners.

Results — men: coxless fours: Dalip Kumar, Tajinder Singh, Bhupinder Singh and Sukhbir Singh 1: Dalel Khan, Roop Chand, Balwinder and Sukhpal Singh 2, Himat Singh, Sundeep Singh, Sanjay Yadav and Surjit Kumar 3.

Sub-junior: Sanjay Singh 1, Naveen Singh 2, Kanav 3.

Women: Single scull: Rajeshwari 1, Saroj Bala 2, Kirandeep Kaur (sr) 3.

Coxless pairs: Mira Devi and Manjula 1, Rajeshwari and Renuka Sarkar 2.
