Athletic track ready for Afro-Asian Games New Delhi, January 1 Though the old track had not completed its expected life span, the possibility of hosting the Afro-Asian Games from November 3 to 11, necessitated the relaying of the track, to be in conformity with international standards. The Polyurethane track is an advanced variety of athletic track imported from Germany, as it has more cushioning effect, which will help the athletes produce better results. The relaying of the track was done under the supervision of German experts and Superintending Engineer (infrastructure) Akhilesh Kumar. The Sports Authority of India (SAI) did not slacken work on the track though the news of the postponement of the Afro-Asian Games was announced while work on the track had just begun. The work was completed as scheduled. Work was also simultaneously completed on the laying of two hockey turfs at the National Stadium. The Sportilux hockey turf was imported from Desso DLW, Netherlands. Delhi is now the only city in the country which boasts of three brand new synthetic hockey turfs – two at the National Stadium and one at the Shivaji Stadium. Meanwhile, the Government has only “postponed” the Afro-Asian Games to the last week of March, and not “cancelled” though the Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Uma Bharti has not given any firm commitment regarding the hosting of the games even in March, what with war clouds hovering over the Indo-Pak skies. Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president Suresh Kalmadi and secretary-general Randhir Singh have already announced that the IOA is fully prepared to host the games in March-April. The IOA has reportedly managed to secure fresh dates from international federations and National Olympic Committees of participating countries from Asia and Africa, for the Games. Randhir Singh is confident that the games could be hosted with a budget of Rs 30-35 crores, now that all the major works on the infrastructural front have been completed. The Afro-Asian Games are expected to cost around Rs 150 crores out which a major chunk was to be spent on the renovation of the stadium and laying of new athletic and hockey tracks. But the renovation and other works were completed for much less amount than what had been estimated. Now, the Government has to only give the go ahead for the Games, other things being very much in place. |

Frontiers snatch points from City Club in DSA League New Delhi, January 1 City Club, very popular club among soccer fans from Old Delhi, was packed with many talented players. They called the shots in the initial part of the match, but forwards Sunil Chetri and Aftab Ashraf muffed virtual sitters from close. The forwards’ inability to convert good goal-bearing moves created by mid-fielders G Ninja Kabui and Vivek Sharma brought to nought the victory hopes of City. Midway through the contest, Frontier started making inroads into the City territory when wingers Balvinder Singh and Anuraj Meena floated crosses into the goal area. But forwards Nitin Pant and Kecakielie could not make use of the nice passes, as they bungled with their shots. |
