Sports tournament concludes

Star Sports Club of Jalandhar prevailed over Jasbir Cub of Jattana village 2-1 to win the hockey title in the 5th Sukhchaindeep Singh ‘Sukha’ Memorial Sports Tournament organised by the Boparai Cultural and Sports Club at Gudhani Kalan, near here, which concluded yesterday.

Ranjeet Singh and Razwan struck for the winners while the lone goal for Jattana was scored by Lakhu.

The winners pocketed a cash prize of Rs 15,000 and the losing side got Rs 12,000. In football, Hambhran Bet scraped past Daheru 5-4. The issue was resolved via sudden death since the two teams were tied at 3-3 at the end of the stipulated period. Hambhran Bet team were given a cash prize of Rs 15,000 along with a memento while the losers got a cash prize of Rs 12,000.

In tug of war, Punjab State Electricity Board got the better of Burj Dona and in kabaddi (all open) Tony Club of Kube village outplayed Sports Club, Kalakh, 15-12 to receive the first prize of Rs 15,000. The losing team got Rs 12,000.

In kabaddi (62 kg) Gudhani Kalan beat Dakha 19-15. Dharminder and Babloo of Gudhani Kalan were declared best raider and best locker, respectively.

The chief patrons of the organising club, Mr Satwant Singh Boparai from Canada, and Mr Jasbir Singh from USA presided over the prize distribution function and gave away trophies to the participants. Hardeep Kaur, a promising hammer thrower from the nearby Lehal village was also honoured on the occasion. She was given a cash prize of Rs 3,100 and a memento. NRIs, including Mr Manjit Singh (from Australia), Durlabh Singh (from Canada) also graced the concluding function.

Dr Mahal appointed umpire

Dr M S Mahal, a senior entomologist with the Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, has been appointed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to stand as umpire in the fifth One Day International tie between India and England scheduled to be held at Mumbai on February 3. Since 1986, Dr Mahal has stood umpire in over 100 national championship matches in different age groups.

Dr Mahal, a BCCI panel umpire, had also officiated in the Women’s World Cup match between Sri Lanka and West Indies in December 1997 and also three 3-day games against the visiting teams, Pakistan (February 1999), Zimbabwe ( November 2000) and Australia (February 2001).
