Milkha Singh raises a moot point
Arvind Katyal

Chandigarh
The controversy over Arjuna Awards has grown further with the former ace athlete, Flying Sikh Milkha Singh, once again refusing to attend the ceremony. Milkha Singh is of the view that it has not been right for the Union Sports Ministry to recommend awards on the basis of propaganda by some undeserving players. Milkha Singh’s voice became hot news and it was flashed all over India. There may be many Milkha Singhs who felt similarly but very few of them could be heard or noticed. Thought the award has been there for many years, but this year it received heavy criticism. The points raised by Milkha Singh include giving cash to those who got the Arjuna Award from 1961 to 1975 when the award was not accompanied by any cash. Many of them who got the Arjuna Award three or four decades ago are now living in penury. Some of them are in a critical health condition.

INTER-SCHOOL SPORTS

A UT Inter-School Sports Meet is being organised every month by the UT Education Department for boys and girls. The coaches and associations are taking pains to make the events a success, but the UT Education Department is facing a shortage of technical experts to manage events of this magnitude. The Director, Public Instruction, UT, should take personal interest in the competitions to ensure that these are held in an impartial manner.
