Mathematics Olympiad
Vishal Gulati

FOR high school students who have a love for maths, here is a chance to prove their prowess along with students of 76 countries at a mega international event to be held in July, 2002, in the UK.

The event, the International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO), offers the students an opportunity to assess their performance in a test environment that is stimulating but non-threatening and leads to international recognition. No formal education at the university level is required. Problems come from various areas of mathematics, which requires exceptional mathematical ability.

What is the olympiad activity in India? Every year regional-level tests are held to select students for participating in the national contest, Indian National Mathematics Olympiad (INMO). The country is divided into 18 regions. Punjab, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal and Chandigarh comprise one region. This year the screening test for regional-level olympiad, will be held on September 30 at the Department of Mathematics, Panjab University, Chandigarh, Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla, MD University, Rohtak, Jammu University, Jammu, Punjabi University, Patiala, Guru Jambheshwar University, Hisar, SD College (Ludhiana), PG Government College (Hoshiarpur), Dr B.R. Ambedkar Regional Engineering College (Jalandhar), Government Rajindra College (Bathinda) and DAV College (Kangra). After the screening test, 75 students will be shortlisted who will be given a three-day training at Panjab University in November. Finally, they will appear in the regional-level test in December.

At least 30 top scorers from each region have been invited by the National Board of Higher Mathematics for the national exam, INMO, on the first Sunday of February. After that 30 will be shortlisted for an intensive four-week training camp in problem solving. Finally, a team of six students will be selected for the IMO. The competition is open to students of Class XII. However, students of Class X can also apply. The aspirants are required to apply through their respective principals to the coordinator of their respective university or institute. The last date is September 26.

Please tell me the universities that offer LLB through correspondence.

Q I am very eager to do LLB, but due to certain professional priorities I want to do it through correspondence. So please list the universities offering the course through correspondence.

Monika Thakur, HP

Neither IGNOU nor any other university offers a full-fledged 3-yr LLB through correspondence. However, the following law courses can be done through correspondence:

Annamalai University, Directorate of Distance Education, Annamalinagar 608002. Courses: Bachelor of Academic Laws (3yrs) and Bachelor of General Laws (2yrs).

Madurai Kamraj University, Directorate of Distance Education, Palkalainagar, Madurai 625021. Course: Bachelor of General Laws (2yrs).

Unfortunately, due to statutory requirements, these courses are not recognised by the Bar Council of India and you will not be able to practice in a court of law after doing these courses.

Q I am in government job. I want to do BEd through correspondence and have no prior teaching experience. Please advise.

A Under the guidelines issued by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), the apex statutory body established by an Act of Parliament for co-ordinating and monitoring teacher education in the country, only working teachers with minimum three years of teaching experience in a recognised school (primary, secondary or higher secondary) within the jurisdiction of the concerned university are allowed to enrol for correspondence courses in BEd. All others must enrol in a regular face-to-face programme. This rule has been formulated with a view to achieving planned and co-ordinated development and also maintenance of norms and standards in teacher-education system throughout the country.

The following universities offer BEd through correspondence: Himachal Pradesh University, International Centre for Distance Education & Open Learning, Summer Hill, Shimla 171005, H.P. Indira Gandhi National Open University, Maidan Garhi, New Delhi 110068. For details, contact the nearest regional centre. Q I had completed BA part II in 1995. Now I want to complete my BA but HPU, Shimla, isn’t allowing me to do so. Is there any other university which allows students to complete their IIIrd yr?

Ravinder Singh, Shimla

A As per the IGNOU prospectus, BA offers a provision for students of other universities to continue their regular courses in the equivalent correspondence course offered by IGNOU. However I quote from the IGNOU prospectus.

Credit Transfer: "Credit transfer" means allowing a student of another university to get admitted to IGNOU for completing any equivalent degree/diploma programme on the basis of credits obtained by him in that university. A student thus admitted need not write IGNOU examinations for such courses which are found equivalent to and for which appropriate credits would be deemed to have been acquired for and purposes of fulfilling the IGNOU requirements for award of a degree/diploma.

Eligibility: The credit transfer scheme is applicable to those candidates who have not completed their degree from any other recognised university, yet willing to complete through IGNOU as per rules provided.

Also, I have heard that there’s a similar provision for DU correspondence courses, the details of which can be acquired from the school itself.

Credit transfer can be done on the basis of individual subjects and not on the basis of year-to-year subjects as in conventional institutions.

In order to get a degree/diploma from IGNOU, a student must earn at least 50% credits from IGNOU. The degree certificate/mark list given would specifically indicate credits earned from IGNOU and from other institution.

All applications for credit transfer must be addressed to the Deputy Registrar, SR & E Block-3, IGNOU, Maidan Garhi, New Delhi 110068, enclosing a DD of Rs. 50/- per subject drawn in favour of IGNOU, payable at New Delhi. You must also enclose attested copies of your mark sheet as well as an attested copy of the syllabus covered by the university.
