Amit Bhardwaj, Karnal A. If you do not wish to go through LAN, practically you have very limited options then. You may create connectivity by either modem using your telephone lines and use software like Really Anywhere, PC anywhere and other remote networking software. Secondly, you can create a VPN or virtual private network. This facility is available as a default installation in operating systems like Windows '98 SE, Windows 2000, Windows Me etc. By creating a VPN you can work just as if you have LAN. As another option you can opt for direct cable networking. However, this option will be a little costly, as you will have to draw long wires between your PCs. However, there will be no need for any kind of software as well as hardware changes. Q. I have an assembled P III, 667 MHz PC with Intel 810e chipset motherboard, 20 GB HDD, 64 MB SD RAM, 52X CD-ROM and Windows '98 SE operating system, all packed in AT cabinet. My problems are: 1) I already have three-button Logitech mouse and want to install new two-button mouse with browsing facility. Kindly tell me the steps to follow. The new mouse has its own driver. My system has PS/2 point on the back of the cabinet. 2) Whenever I copy text from a Web page and paste it in MS Word and reopen the file the message appears: "the program has performed illegal operation. If the problem persists, contact program vendor." Dolly, Gurdaspur A. In order to use your scroll mouse efficiently, you must install its driver first. This driver will enable all functions of your scroll mouse. As far as the steps are concerned, all you need to do is run the Setup.exe or install.exe file and for rest follow the instructions. The mouse driver will be installed properly. Regarding your second problem, please try renaming the file before opening it. This will solve your problem. Q. I have an assembled PC - P III, 500 MHz, 64 MB RAM, 810 Tomato motherboard, 10 GB Seagate Hard Disk, Samsung CD drive. Whenever I switch on the system nothing is displayed on the monitor. However keyboard, hard disk and monitor are detected but not CD drive. I opened the cabinet, checked the connections, CMOS battery and then tried booting and it started off. After a while when I again try booting the same problem persists. Ashish Jain, Sangrur A. This problem could be because of two reasons. Firstly, there could be some problem in your VGA card. Either it is not inserted in the slot properly or has developed some problem. In either case you will need to get your VGA card checked. Secondly, since there is nothing displayed on your computer screen, not even after booting, so I do not suspect it to be a problem of CMOS battery. Rather there could be a problem in the motherboard. In order to solve this problem first get your VGA card checked and then check your motherboard. Q. I have an HCL computer Pentium III, 800 MHz, 810chipset, 64 MB RAM computer. Of late I am encountering some problems listed below. Kindly clear the doubts and oblige. My computer often hangs while working. This is common while working on paint pro. Although it hangs in any program, it hangs when document is ready even on MSWord. Sometimes while booting, it hangs on first step and when we are just about to enter the set up later when power is switched off and computer starts again, it boots normally. Many times while playing CD (may be for songs or video games) the home page appears with the message: Want to work offline or get connected. Kindly suggest the remedy. Dr. K.K. Sharma, Dharamsala A. From the description of your problem, it appears that there is a problem in your hardware. First run scandisk in through mode and view the results for the possibility of any bad sectors in your system. If any bad sectors are being reported in the hard disk, then you can associate this problem with bad sectors and thus should opt for replacing your hard disk. However, if the hard disk is found to be free from errors and no bad sectors are being reported then this problem could be due to some problem in your motherboard, for which you will have to get in touch with your hardware vendor. But before that you can also try to reinstall your operating system. Q. I have an assembled P III 866 MHz, 128 MB RAM, 20GB HDD, 52Xcd drive, D-link internal modem. I use Mercury KOB 815e FSX Motherboard, Window '98 SE. System resources are 82 per cent free. I have loaded some games from CD. I also have movies in my disk. The problem is after playing games when I start movies, the system hangs and I have to restart my computer. I regularly perform scandisk and defragmenter. The BIOS setting in Advanced chipset features option on chip video window size and AGP graphics aperture size is at 32MB. In motherboard manual it is 64 MB shown as default. How to get rid of hanging problem? Japnam Jassal, SAS Nagar A. Normally games involve a lot of graphic, which while playing consume a lot of your system resources. Thus it is always advisable to shut down your machine and turn it on again to use it for any purpose. This actually frees your RAM that gets cluttered while playing games. Restarting your machine after turning on will solve your problem. However, as another possible solution, you should also increase the paging file size to almost 3 to 4 times of RAM. Increasing the paging file size can also solve your problem for good. Regarding your BIOS settings, please load optimised default setting and this will load best-suited setting for your PC. As far as the settings as per motherboard manual are concerned, they are generalised and may vary with different processor combination. Q. I have P III 500 MHz computer with 810 d motherboard, 64 MB RAM, 56 KB Dlink internal modem, and installed Win '98 SE on it. My problem is after working near about one hour the mouse movements gets slow even if movement settings in control panel is full. While using the Net sometimes, my system hangs and most of the time while chatting in Yahoo! messenger in use some times Ctrl+ Alt+ Del work and sometimes it does not work. In that case I have to reset the system. When I use the Internet Explorer or Outlook Express sometimes it gives the error message 'The program has performed an illegal operation and will shut down.' Please tell me what should I do to fix these problems? Bhushan, Ambala City A. First of all
perform scandisk in thorough mode on your system and let scan disk
report and rectify the errors automatically. If there are any errors, it
will be corrected by the scandisk itself. Sometimes, there could be
cross-linking of files etc., which may make your system unstable. If
there are any such errors, it will be corrected by scandisk. Also,
scandisk will report any bad sectors on your hard disk. If there are any
bad sectors, then it can be blamed for all such problems. However if
there are no bad sectors, then you should perform Defrag and disk
cleanup as it will take care of rest of your problems. Hopefully this
would solve the problem, unless this problem relates to hardware, like
motherboard. However, if this does not solve your problem, then you can
try booting your system in safe mode. If your system works well in safe
mode then the easiest way is to uninstall some of the memory-based
programs from your system like games that involve lot of graphics and
reinstall your operating system without uninstalling it. Still if the
problem persists, then get hardware like motherboard and RAM checked. |
