Dreaming of journey
Vinaya Katoch Manhas

SHOULD you wish to embark on a journey and are not able to do so, it indicates your inhibitions regarding the completion of a work. To dream of overtaking other vehicles portrays a competitive nature on your part and your achieving success. To dream of travelling with someone else portrays a desire in us to form a relationship with that person. To bid someone goodbye before embarking on a journey could indicate a desire within us to end the relationship or a fear that the relationship with the particular person might end. Accidents and traffic offences have to do with sexuality or self-image.

To dream of driving a vehicle represents that you are in control of your life. To see someone else drive it represents your dependability on him in your real life. The means of travelsuggests a particular stage in our life.

Travelling by a bicycle suggests youth and freedom. Travelling by a car suggests our way of handling our life. An aeroplane suggests a swift and easy journey. It could also indicate us playing with the thought of embarking on a new sexual relationship. The pilot is often the romanticised picture of the self. Ship is a feminine symbol, whereas the rowboat is symbolic of our journey after death. It is the giving up of selfish desires. We may have brought about a change in ourselves, giving birth to a new self. Bus travel represents that part of ourselves where we desire to be with others in our lives.

Should we miss a bus, it portrays a lack of control over ourselves. But we should not panic for although one opportunity has been missed, another life the next bus will soon come along. Should we embark on a wrong bus, it portrays conflicting desires and our fear of making the wrong choice. In short, it portrays our uncertainty as to which is the right decision to make. Should you embark on a bus to find yourself without the money to pay the fare, it portrays our inability, due to some reason, mostly lack of resources, to go forward with a particular course of action.

Should you own a vehicle and find that its engine not working properly then it portrays the lack of initiative and energy within you to start on a particular course of action. If the vehicle is overloaded it suggests that you feel bowed down by the extent of your responsibilities.

Travelling on a motorbike portrays a masculine youthful side of yours. Should a woman dream of driving one, it portrays the dominance of the animus in her personality. It also portrays the desire to be independent and free.

A train portrays the dreamer’s attitude towards himself and the society. Catching a train portrays success while missing one, like the symbol of the missing bus, portrays missed opportunities. Getting off a train at your destination would prove success in your endeavour. But should you get off before you reach your destination it portrays you are unsure and fearful regarding the outcome of your action. It also portrays a desire to undo what you have started. To be walking in your dream suggests our independence and selfreliance. You do not need the help of anyone else to accomplish that which you have undertaken. Should you go far a leisurely walk it shows your desire to relax and get away from others to have some time for yourself.

Thus, travelling as a dream-symbol is vast and a lot of other factors have to be taken into consideration while analysing this particular symbol. In fact it would be right to say that journey, as a symbol, is an emulation of several symbols put together.
