RANGA

Premadasa

Premadasa, the President of Sri Lanka who was assassinated on May Day, was in Delhi on a state visit on October 2, 1992. I met him at Rajghat where he had gone to pay his respects to the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi. I strode up to him to get his autograph on his sketch. He immediately obliged and then calmly asked me for a sheet of white paper. In a little over a minute, he drew my sketch, using my pen and presented it to me with his autograph, saying, "I should reciprocate." Well, should I say I was cartooned?
