3 convicted in dowry death case

The Additional Sessions Judge, Ludhiana, Mr G.R. Banyal, has convicted three dowry death case accused — Vijay Kumar alias Kimti Lal (28), mother-in-law Gurbachan Kaur (72) and father-in-law Swaran Singh (78) — all residents of Vishkarma Nagar, Tajpur Road, Ludhiana, on the charges of killing Boby alias Renu Bala by burning her on September 21, 1997.

Just after nine months of marriage Renu Bala was killed as she failed to fulfill the demand of Rs 50,000 raised by her in-laws, according to the prosecution.

A case was registered against the accused persons at the Focal Point, police stations Ludhiana, on September 1997 under sections 304-B/34 IPC, on the statement of Mr Gurdev Singh, maternal uncle of the deceased, wherein he had stated that the marriage of Boby alias Renu was performed with the Vijay Kumar, about nine months ago. And Simrati, mother of deceased, had given sufficient dowry, according to her capacity.

The complainant further alleged that Simrati had informed him that she paid Rs 5000 to the in-laws of Boby, and now the dispute was over the demand of Rs 50,000.

Mr Gurdev Singh also alleged that on September 21, 1997 when he entered the house of Renu Bala he saw that her father-in-law and mother-in-law had caught hold of her. Immediately, her husband Vijay Kumar stabbed her twice and thereafter she was burnt by his husband, he alleged

The accused have pleaded not guilty and alleged that Renu Bala was a patient of depression and her treatment was going on at Phagwara. Under depression she poured kerosene oil on herself and set her body aflame. But the Judge rejected the plea of the defence and hold them guilty.
