Q. I have assembled PC Intel Celeron 766 MHz, Vintron Intel 810E Chipset motherboard, 64 MB RAM, 20 GB HDD, 52X CD-ROM Drive and onboard ALC 200 Sound Card with Windows ’98 Operating System. I use Winamp 2.65 for MP 3 songs. After installing DirectX 8 on my computer, there is a disturbing sound from speakers, whenever I play MP 3 files, Midi Files or a movie CD on my computer. Earlier, there is no disturbing sound of such a kind without DirectX 8. I have checked the speakers with audio CD and found them to be correct. Earlier, I had assembled a PC with Azza Motherboard and same ALC 200 onboard sound card. That faces no problem of such kind after installing the DirectX 8. Please help me in solving the problem.

Tirath Singh, Ludhiana

A. First of all you must check the proper installation of DirectX 8 driver by using the DXDiag utility. The DXDiag utility provides detailed information on the installation. To use the utility, click on the start button, select Run... from the menu, type .exe’ into the Open: field, and click OK. If there is any problem with the installation, then you must reinstall it. However, if no problem is reported, then as the first option, you must try to upgrade the driver for your sound card, as that could be the possible reason for the problem mentioned by you.

Q. I am having a Vintron P III 800 MHz, 128 MB RAM, 20 GB HDD, and Windows ’98 SE as my operating system. I face two problems:
1. Whenever I run disk cleanup it gives me an error, "The program has performed an illegal operation and will shut down." So tell me if this problem can be solved.

2. Half of my hard disk is full. I want to attach another hard disk of 20 GB without removing the existing hard disk. Tell me, is it possible or do I have to replace my current hard disk with that of higher capacity.

Chetan Garg, Jalandhar City

A. Regarding your first problem, please write to me the exact message along with the memory address details, which you can find from the details of the problem. As this will help in solving your problem precisely. However as another option just clean all your junk files manually. Here you will be required to empty your recycle bin, all *.tmp files in the Temp directory and also the memory and disk cache files. This will solve your problem for the next time. But if even this does not work, then the option available to you would be to reinstall Windows without uninstalling as this will replace the corrupt file if any, which may be causing the problem. Regarding the second problem, it is very much possible to add another hard disk to your computer. This can be done by making the second hard disk as secondary master or primary slave. Normally your hard disk is primary master and your CD ROM is secondary master. Now, you can make your second hard disk as secondary master and auto detect it from the BIOS set up. However, you may also have to do some changes in the jumper setting of your hard disk for defining it as primary slave or secondary master as the case may be.

Q. I have a Zenith PC but it is facing some problems: In the start up, it shows itself as P III but in Windows it says that it is a genuine Intel *86 family model. Kindly tell me what the real version is. Secondly, my PC takes nearly 75 second to boot up. The third problem is that it loses its dial tone while connecting to the Internet. The configuration of my computer is:

1. P III 700Mhz

2. 64 MB

2. 52x CD drive

3. 52x multimedia kit and keyboard

4. Built in modem HSP56

6. SIS graphic card

Rajan, Phagwara

A. Your first query is actually not a problem as technically the information you get in Windows is correct for this range of processors. Regarding your second problem, there could be several reasons for long booting time. However, some of the most common factors and their solutions are as follows. Disable floppy seek at boot up. This will save 7 to 8 seconds of your booting time. Second, remove Norton or other anti-virus from the booting up process. This can be done easily by editing your Autoexec.bat file simply by typing rem in the beginning of the line, which has the command for the anti-virus. This is one of the major reasons for long time requirement for booting your computer. Similar to Anti virus software, you can disable other programs and drivers also, which are not essential to be the part of the booting process. However, before attempting to edit your Autoexec.bat file, you must save a copy of it first. You can further shorten the booting process time by keeping your system tray slim and trim and by removing all programs like Real Player, Real Juke Box, Yahoo messenger, MSN messenger etc. as all these programs can be started as and when you require.

Q. I recently purchased a Motorola SM 56 type of internal modem (make LG, model LM-I56K), but it does not get installed on my computer. My computer configuration is P II, 333 MHz, 64 MB RAM, and 2.3 GB HDD. After inserting the card in the PCI slot and switching the power on, the modem is detected by Windows and installed with the message, "Modem installed successfully," but it does not work. Upon checking through "My Computer," we see that no COM port has been allocated to the modem. Diagnostics show hardware conflict. An external modem was installed on COM 2 earlier; uninstalling it also does not make any difference. We have nine more exactly similar configuration computers. The same modem installs successfully on those (COM 4 is allocated) and works OK. Please suggest a remedy other than reformatting the HDD.

S.S. Phoolka, Solan

A. The internal modems are being installed on the COM3 and COM4 ports and are not installed on regular serial ports like COM1 & COM2. Now if Windows has automatically detected it and installed it successfully, then it should work properly also. In your mail you have written that "Diagnostic show hardware conflict". However, according to me there cannot be a hardware conflict in this case unless you change the IRQ settings. Now if you have changed the IRQ settings, due to which your modem might not be working, then I would advice you to restore your IRQ settings. However, if this is not the case, then please check the modem configuration of the Internet connection icon in Dial up networking. Here if the external modem is selected then change it to your Internal modem and then try connecting. You can do this by opening the dial up networking in My computer and then by right clicking on the Internet connection icon. In the option for connect using modem, select the internal modem and then dial. This will solve your problem.

Q. I have an assembled computer P III, 800,128 RAM, 20 GB hard disk and Operating system is Windows ’98. My problem is when I turn on my computer to full brightness, it shows some horizontal lines continuously moving upward but at the desktop it does not show lines. When I work in C language, it again shows lines sometimes. I want to check my original configuration. How is it possible?

Amandeep Singla, Dhuri

A. I could not understand what exactly do you mean by checking original configuration in your current problem. Please elaborate. Regarding the horizontal lines, it appears that the place where you have kept your monitor is under the effect of some magnetic filed. Please remove any object, which uses magnet from near your monitor as it might be causing this problem. This problem may also occur if you have kept another monitor or TV near your monitor.

Q. I have a Zenith infotainer with following configuration — Intel P III, 533 MHz, 15 GB hard disk, 1.44 FDD, OS Windows ’98 SE. My problem is that when I open up the Internet explorer and Netscape navigator it gives a message. This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shutdown. If problem persists, contact the program vendor. Details:- Netscape caused an invalid page fault in module <unknown> at 0000: f2826c44. I have also done scandisk thrice in DOS mode and reinstalled Windows but Internet Explorer gives the same message.

Guneet, Jalandhar

A. Normally problems related to invalid page fault in Netscape could be solved by deleting the .tmp files present in temp directory and also by clearing the memory and disk cache. Since these files sometimes creates problem thus it needs to be deleted first as they also consume a lot of cache memory. This logic applies to the Internet explorer also. So, first of all remove all temporary files and clear the disk cache and memory cache. Also please see that the following line is in your autoexec.bat: set temp = c:\ temp. By making sure the above, your problem would be solved. However, if somehow the problem still persists, then create a new profile and make it your default. This will further reduce the chances of any errors, if not corrected by the previous method. However, if even despite all this the problem is not solved, then you should uninstall the Netscape from this location and install it fresh on some other location e.g. another drive etc.
