New PGI session begins today

The inaugural function of the new academic session of the PGI will be held tomorrow in Bhargava Auditorium here. Prof R.K. Chandra, Research Professor and Director of Allergy and Immunology in the University of Newfoundland in Canada, will be the chief guest. He will speak on ‘Physician — Researcher-Teacher — A Triple Jeopardy’.

Prof Chandra has been a member of prestigious scientific societies. He has also authored over 185 articles, besides review papers and 20 books. He has received 11 honorary degrees and over 90 awards from universities and societies worldwide.

Free diabetes camps on Aug 15

Chandigarh, July 15
The first district cabinet meeting of Lions Club International District 321-F was held at Hotel Park Inn today. It was presided over by Mr Dinesh Sood.

He announced at the meeting that all districts will hold free diabetes camps throughout Punjab on August 15.

Mr Sood stressed upon the need to increase the membership, keeping in view a call given by the international president to raise the membership from 14 lakh to 20 lakh within the next two years.

He also urged them to contribute generously towards the LCIF. The budget for 2001-2002 was also adopted.

Later, the reports presented by the district cabinet secretary and treasurer were also considered.

Speaking about the projects, Mr Sood said members of the club should take up eye operation camps, environment, literacy and hepatitis-B immunisation camps as major projects.

Among others who attended the meeting were Dr N.K. Grover, multiple council chairman, Mr Prem Grover, Mr Janak Gupta, past district governor, Mr Darshan Monga, vice-district governor, and all the cabinet members, besides 150 other members.

Many ball badminton meets ahead

Chandigarh, July 15
The Chandigarh Ball Badminton Association has decided to organise the fifth Chandigarh Junior State Championship for boys and girls under the age of 19 from August 24 to 27 in the Sector 21 IS Dev Samaj Senior Secondary School.

This will be followed by the seventh Chandigarh Sub-Junior (under 15) State Ball Badminton Championship for the Santosh Kumar Rana trophy from August 31 to September 3 in the Sector 41 Shivalik Public School. The first Chandigarh Inter-club Super League Ball Badminton Championship for the Luxmi Arya Trophy will be held in the Sector 22 MDAV School from September 29 to October 2.

He said, this year, the emphasis was on organising tournaments for junior and sub-junior player. The third Chandigarh Mini State Ball Badminton Championships are to be held in Guru Harkishan Public School on October 27 and 28. The fourth Chandigarh Senior State Ball Badminton Championships for the Gulzar Singh Saini Trophy will he held in the Sector 41 Shivalik Public School from November 15 to 18.

The association has also praised its players for their recent achievements. Eight players were selected for the national camp. They are as follows: Mukesh Sharma, Anisha Bhatti, Shweta Vyas, Sonika, Jagdeep Kaur, Monu, K. Smiti and Monika. The following were declared the best upcoming players: Sonika, Jaswinder Kaur, Anisha Bhatti, Ritika, Monika, Shweta Vyas, Rajinder Kaur, Jagdeep Kaur, Monika Panjla, Shiva Kumar, Mukesh Sharma and K. Smiti.

The UT boys’ and girls’ teams had stood sixth in the 20th sub-junior national meet that was held past year. They were on the same position in the 46th junior national meet at Bhilai. The UT girls’ team stood sixth again in the 46th senior national meet in Rohtak this year. The UT women’s team was placed eighth and the men’s team was placed 12th in the meet.

AIFF selects city player

Chandigarh, July 15
The All-India Football Federation has selected Ravinder of the Sector 44 Sanjay Public School under its talent-hunt programme. The selection trials were held under the supervision of a foreign coach, Islam. Ms Urmil Sethi, Principal of the school, said the institution would soon hold the Chandigarh state sub-junior championship. The school has won the DAV Trophy, the SD Trophy, Pre-Subroto Cup Tournament and the CBSE Cluster XI Trophy in the past.

She said the school would select 34 players under its talent-hunt programme. The selected boys will be provided with free boarding, lodging, education, kits and the other equipment.

Markfed carrom from July 21

Chandigarh, July 15
The Punjab State Cooperative Supply and Federation will organise carrom tournaments for its employees and their children in all the 17 districts of the state from July 21 to 22 and from July 28 to 29.

On July 21 and 22 the tournament would be held at Bathinda, Ferozepore, Fatehgarh Sahib, Hoshiarpur, Ludhiana, Moga, Patiala and Ropar while on July 28 and 29 the matches would be held at Amritsar, Faridkot, Gurdaspur, Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Mansa, Nawanshahr, Muktsar and Sangrur.

The matches would be held in singles sections in the men’s, women’s, junior under-18 and under-14.

Markfed is seeking the services of the Chandigarh Carrom Association and the Punjab State Carrom Association for holding the tournaments.

Refresher course for police officers concludes

The second refresher course for Investigating Officers from different units of the Chandigarh police concluded yesterday, with the Principal, Recruit Training Centre and the SP (Operations), Mr H.G.S. Dhaliwal, presenting certificates to the participants.

The four-week refresher course consisted of indoor and outdoor classes. During outdoor classes, emphasis was laid on PT, yoga, drill and games. The course was meant for investigating officers at the Head Constables to Sub Inspectors level.

As many as 40 police personnel from all units of the city police, including 11 police stations participated in the refresher course.

The idea behind these courses, was to hone the skills of the police personnel in investigation and related areas.

The indoor training was related to major Criminal Acts and Local and Special laws. The module on gender sensitisation was organised in association with the Sociology Department, Panjab University; on human rights in association with the Punjab Human Rights Commission, and on community policing in association with the police officers and opinion leaders of the community.

A module on computer application also formed part of the refresher course It was conducted by the computer centre of the Police Headquarters on Saturday and the syllabus prescribed by the National Crime Record Bureau was covered.

Bansal visits 3 villages

Continuing with his drive to visit the UT villages to oversee various developmental works under the MPLAD scheme, the local MP, Mr Pawan Bansal, today visited Dadu Majra, Palsora and Maloya villages.

According to a press note, Mr Bansal, who was welcomed by the panchayats led by the sarpanches, inspected various works being carried out from the MPLAD scheme and announced a further grant of Rs 25 lakh for the three villages.

Developmental works such as recarpeting of roads, upgradation of cremation ground and graveyards would be undertaken from this grant. He also announced funds for the construction of a multi-purpose complex in Palsora village.

Low compounding fee sought

Owners of shop-cum-flats (SCF) and shop-cum-offices (SCO) in the town have sought regularisation of construction in the rear courtyard of their premises at nominal rates.

The SCF Owners Association of Phase V, in a representation to the Chief Administrator, said charging a compounding fee of Rs 500 per sq feet for regularising the coverage in the rear courtyard was not justified.

Mr Surjit Singh, president of the association, said the town enjoyed a special status and additional facilities had been provided to ensure its fast development. The Rent Control Act and the House Tax had not been levied on the commercial property in the town. The association also demanded the opening of shops in the rear side of the commercial premises.

Surprise raid on PWD office

SAS Nagar, July 15
The Economic Offence Wing of the Punjab Vigilance Department conducted a surprise check at the Phase III-A office of the Public Works Department ( B and R) on Thursday. The surprise check had been conducted to ascertain stocking of certain materials in the stores which was meant to be used before the rains.

However, nothing incriminating was found in the store of the office. As the store-keeper was not present at the time of the checking, the office was sealed for a day. After the officials of the Vigilance Department satisfied themselves and checked the record register with the store-keepers, the employees were allowed to go on Friday.
