Short training course on fabric decoration for kids
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, July 11
The Department of Clothing and Textiles of the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) had organised a five-day short training course recently on ‘Decoration of fabric with non- conventional painting methods’ for children between 8 to 12 years. The course coordinators were Mrs Raminder Kaur and Mrs Devinder Kaur, Assistant Professors in the department.

During this course the children used the non-conventional printing techniques using leaves, bark pieces, cut vegetables, threads, bangles, fingers, stencils, sponges, etc to design handkerchiefs, table mats, pillow covers, pencil cases, shopping bags, wall-hanging, etc. They also used these techniques on paper to design greetings cards, envelopes, book covers etc. The products designed by the children were evaluated during a competition and Gurpriya, Ruhi and Rishika were awarded the first, second and third prizes, respectively.

Dr O.P. Singh, Professor-cum-Head of the Department of Clothing and Textiles, said that printing was the most versatile method of fabric decoration but the conventional methods of printing like blocks, screen etc. were not easy to practice at home and hence this course focused on non-conventional printing techniques which were not only economical but also had more potential for innovation and creativity which was present in abundance in children.
