Little work in Cath Lab
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, July 2
The Cath Lab of the PGI Cardiology Department has almost stopped functioning after the search operation conducted by the CBI. Sources said that a large number of patients scheduled for intervention procedures at this one and the only Cath Lab of the PGI are unable to get appointments for their turn.

When contacted, a PGI Cardiology Department doctor confirmed that functioning of the Cath Lab had reduced by almost 90 per cent. “We will not allow anyone to die which is why we are taking only the emergency cases. But functioning under a needle of suspicion is not easy. And it is certainly difficult to motivate a team under such circumstances,” he added

“Ask the CBI,” was the answer he gave when asked how long will the situation continue. It may be mentioned that the CBI conducted a search operation on June 20 and found more than 100 stents in the Cath Lab. Although the CBI is asking for the account of these stents and trying to find out whether there was any wrong practice going on in the Cath Lab, the doctors said that these many stents were required round the clock in the lab so that emergency interventions could be performed in time to save a patient’s life.

Meanwhile, eight out of 10 dealers/stockists from whom the PGI has asked for an affidavit, saying they have kept one or more of these items in the revolving stock at their own risk and that they are willing to continue to do so in future have done so. The two stockists who have not given affidavits are the ones whose items are not part of the present stock. Besides this, the dealers who disclaimed ownership of these items in a section of the Press have also given their clarification to the PGI, added the doctor from the Cardiology Department.
