DR K.P. Janardhanan (52), an IIM passout and a gold-medallist, has many research publications to his credit. His career as a management and a computer teacher won him accolades from Columbia University, New York. Janardhanan also had an opportunity to work with the World Bank team and has also served as an expert for All India Council for Science and Technology (AICTE), the governing body of technical institutions. At present, he is the Director of Regional Institute of Management and Technology, Mandi Gobindgarh, an upcoming institute that would offer MBA, MCA and BCA courses. The following are excerpts from an exclusive interview with Log in… Tribune:

You could have very well chosen a career in the IT industry. What made you come to the teaching line?

Training and consultancy have been my forte. Thus professional education is one of my favorite interests.

When did you college start and what have been the special achievements of your institute?

The RIMT was established in August 2000. This institute has been created to counter the deficiency in quality standards, an aspect that other technical colleges of this region lack. Within a short span of time the college has developed an extensive and high quality infrastructure with the state-of-the-art computer laboratories, supported by experienced and qualified faculty members.

Does the Gobindgarh – Khanna GT road belt hold any special significance as a lot of educational institutions have sprung up here in recent past?

Yes, of course. This particular area is located in the industrial belt of Punjab. Moreover, proximity to the GT road makes it easily accessible from major cities of North India. Mandi Gobindgarh and its surrounding areas have a lot of student population who would have otherwise gone out for admissions to colleges located at Chandigarh and Ludhiana.

Why has your college jumped onto the IT bandwagon? Is it because of the latest trend? Do you think that pass outs have any future despite market being saturated due to IT glut, recession and benching aboard?

The present recession is just a temporary phase of a normal business cycle. The market is bound to revive after a short span. The USA itself has predicted a backlog of 4,00,000 vacancies for IT professionals in various specialised areas. Thus decision to supply excellent human resources to IT sector is not only because of the latest trends but also because of our strength in this area. The quality and variety of services students get here will be very different, and that is what we are looking for. If students come to feel that this is the kind of institution they had been looking for, vis-ŕ-vis quality standard, we would say that we have achieved our purpose.

How does your college promise to be different from the rest of the crowd?

This is an institute distinct from the run-of-the-mill in many ways. The institute’s student service and student welfare policies are wide-ranging and unmatchable. Students would also be provided an opportunity for undergoing several part-time certified professional courses in information technology. Overall, we promise an enjoyable and congenial environment for the training and development of students, topped with active placement support.

What future plans do you have for college and students, regarding upgradation, affiliations, placement and study centre?

This college will operate under PTU, which has already issued NOC for starting the college. It is approved by AICTE, Ministry of HRD, Government of India. The institute constantly strives for providing many additional services to the students like part-time professional software courses at the campus itself. For placement, there is full-time and experienced placement officer. The RIMT has tied-up with leading corporate houses and is in the process of forging long-term ties with other industries. The institute is also tying up with the leading universities of North India to run their distance education programmes on its campus.
