The right of pronouncing sentence of banishment was vested in the people, who, if there was a general desire expressed to exercise this right, deposited on a fixed day, in a sort of polling station, a small earthen tablet called an ostrakon. On this was written the name of the individual that each voter considered deserving banishment.
