Key to a clean computer

BECOMING the proud owner of a computer is the easy part. But keeping your hi-tech machine in good working condition requires regular care and cleaning and an awareness about what is good or bad for your prized possession. And this is a task which is virtually neglected. Here are a few do’s and don’ts for the computer-savvy generation that can ensure trouble-free and happy hours of Net-picking.

  • First of all, make sure that all food items and liquids are kept at a distance from your computer.

  • Ensure that you never operate your computer without the UPS in working order.

  • Always close your machine by using the shut down command.

  • Periodically remove temporary files (tmp), especially temporary Internet files. Such files are in the cache folder of the Internet Explorer. They help in accessing frequently visited sites faster. But at times, the sheer bulk of such files can slow down the computer and take valuable disc space.

  • Make sure the back of your computer is away from any obstruction to allow for proper ventilation.

  • Clean the keyboard by using ear-buds between different keys. the computer should be shut down before any cleaning is done.

  • Keep your machine away from direct sunlight.

  • And don’t forget that little appendage called the mouse. It needs care, too. The ball of the mouse gathers a lot of dust and lint from the table. To minimise this, always use a mouse pad and clean the mouse periodically.

  • The mouse ball can be cleaned by opening the mouse and turning the bottom panel clockwise. Clean the ball with a lint-free cotton cloth and place it back in the mouse. The mouse will move much more rapidly now.

  • As for the printer, keep it covered when not in use for long periods to prevent dust from gathering on it.

  • Make sure you use inkjet printers at least once a week to prevent the ink from drying.

  • You can even keep your computer covered when it is not going to be in use for a long period.
