Show-cause notices to  20 chemists
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh , June 20
The Director, Health Services, UT Administration, has issued show-cause notices to 20 chemists in the Union Territory who are suspected to be running their shops without holding valid licences of a qualified pharmacist.

According to Dr Rameshwar Chander, DHS, UT Administration, most of these chemists who have been identified are operating from the periphery and villages of the city and have registered their shops on the names of pharmacists who do not even man the counters. A qualified pharmacist should be essentially present behind the counter to issue medicines and write bills, asserts Dr Chander.

Interestingly, many city chemists are running the shops on the behalf of their wives who are the ones actually holding the pharmacist degrees and have the licences for running the shops.

It is learnt that the DHS office had been receiving many complaints against these “fake chemists”. The Chandigarh Chemists Association had also sometime back urged the DHS to take action against such persons as they posed danger to human life.

Dr Chander asserts that chemist shops have to be run by persons holding technical degrees and licences and who are always physically present at the shop.

Meanwhile, he also said that following issuance of these show-cause notices, surprise visits will be conducted on these shops. Any chemist shop not being manned by a qualified pharmacist will face suspension and even cancellation of their licences.
