Mohali council to recruit more firemen
Our Correspondent

SAS Nagar, June 16
To overcome the acute shortage of firemen at the local Fire Station, the Municipal Council today decided to recruit 20 personnel on a contract basis, till the formalities for keeping regular staff members were completed.

Only five firemen are available at present, against the sanctioned strength of 39 and when weekly offs and leave are taken into account, the work is sometimes handled by just one fireman. The Director, Local Government, had earlier given permission to fill the vacant posts.

A five-member committee, comprising the MLA, Mrs Daljit Kaur, the council president, Mr Kulwant Singh, the Executive Officer, Mr H.B. Garg, the ADFO, Mr B.S. Sidhu, and the Municipal Engineer, Mr Ajay Kanwar, was constituted to recruit firemen.

According to the norms, Mr Sidhu said, each fire engine (there are three at the Fire Station) needs 14 firemen, one leading fireman and one telephone operator.

At the meeting, members expressed the necessity of having a police force deployed on a regular basis at the council office. The council staff often faced problems while engaged in the removal of encroachments, stopping of octroi evasion and impounding of animals.

Under the proposal cleared by the House, the police personnel, one ASI and four constables, will be on deputation with the council for a period of one year. The police staff will be paid by the council from its funds.

However, Opposition councillors, including Mr Amrik Singh Mohali, Mr Sukhdev Singh Patwari and Mr Manjit Singh Sethi, opposed the proposal saying that the police force would be a financial burden on the council. They favoured calling the police force if and when the need arose.

There were heated exchanges when an Opposition member, Mr Manjit Singh Sethi, wanted to know why a copy of the agenda of the meeting had not been sent to the MLA. The president admitted the lapse and said he would look into it. He wondered why the MLA, who was present at the meeting, had not raised the issue.

Following a complaint from the municipal councillor of ward number 2, the House decided to pull down a dilapidated bus shelter near Mohali village on the road leading to Kharar. The councillor had said that the structure could collapse any time.

The House also decided to deposit Rs 8,000 against the demand notice of the PSEB for providing a power connection to streetlights in the Phase IX Industrial Area.

400 structures removed
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, June 16
In a major anti-encroachment drive undertaken during the last two days, the enforcement staff of the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh ( MCC) demolished over 400 unauthorised concrete structures in the shape of `pucca rooms’, stairs and boundary walls in Ram Darbar, Industrial Area-I. In fact, a majority of the structures, which were razed to the ground, were being used as shops, STD booths, clinics and for other commercial purposes along the main roads.

The drive was carried out by the staff of the Enforcement Wing along with the Road Division, under the supervision of Executive Engineer (Road-II), Mr Mukesh Anand, yesterday and the SDO, Mr Yash Pal Singh, today. Two JCB’s, four trucks and 30-odd labourers, besides 10-12 police personnel were used in the operation. Though marked by some resistance, the operation, which was carried out for about 7-8 hours on both days, was by and large peaceful. Mr Sunil Dutt, SO, was also present at the site.

The officials, on their part, maintain that these were among some of the oldest encroachments in the city and it was essential to clear the same before undertaking recarpeting work on these roads. Though some people complained that they were not informed earlier and that some of them, who had been running commercial establishments had lost their livelihood, officials maintained that the residents of the area had been given a sufficient notice period before the drive. The encroachments in the inner lanes were yet to be removed, but for that more police force was required.
